Right then, a new week in the 2025 IPL has kicked off with an entertaining contest, setting things up for the rest of the week. Next up, we have a double header lined up on Tuesday, 8 April for all the fans. First up, it will be Kolkata Knight Riders welcoming Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens and that game will begin at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT). This will be followed by a contest between Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings in Mullanpur and that one will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). You can also tune in a lot sooner for the build-up of both those games. Cheers!

Rajat Patidar, the skipper of RCB, is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his stellar knock. Patidar says it was an amazing game and credits his bowlers for showing great courage under pressure. He reckons the Player of the Match award truly belongs to the bowling unit, who delivered when it mattered most. Adds that it is never easy to contain a team at this venue. Patidar lauds Krunal Pandya for holding his nerve in the final over, adding that the strategy was always to take the game deep and save Krunal's over for the end. Commenting on the surface, Patidar says it was a typical Mumbai wicket where the ball came onto the bat nicely. States that having a wrist spinner in the lineup is always a great weapon and appreciates Suyash Sharma for his efforts.

The Presentation ceremony...

Krunal Pandya is in for a chat. He says the bond between him and Hardik is built on genuine love and affection, and the mutual respect they share comes naturally. While both brothers were determined to win, Krunal reckons that’s the beauty of sport that only one team can come out on top, and he admits he feels for Hardik. Reflecting on the game, Krunal states that the experience came into play for him. Reckons clarity of thought was crucial, and committing 100 percent to the plan made the difference. Adds that he is glad it came off for him on the night. On working with Andy Flower, Krunal says it’s been enjoyable, mentioning that he had already spent two years with Andy during their time at LSG. He adds that the team is currently in a pretty good headspace. He also heaps praise on Rajat Patidar, stating that he has been terrific in leading the side. Krunal says that Rajat is the kind of captain who offers comfort and backs a bowler’s game plan, something every bowler wants. On Jitesh Sharma, Krunal says he has been outstanding both with the bat and behind the stumps. He credits Jitesh's top-notch game awareness and mentions the hard work he has put in. When asked about this potentially being RCB’s year, Krunal laughs and says he doesn’t want to jinx it. Adds that the focus is on taking it one game at a time and continuing to keep the wins coming.

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya is down for a chat. He says this was a run-fest. He feels the wicket was very good and adds that with this kind of wicket, the bowlers have no space to hide, and they have to be at their absolute best with their execution to stop the bowlers. He feels he shouldn't be harsh on the bowlers, but he feels it was just a question of conceding 10-12 runs too many. He says the original setup of their team was always Naman Dhir walking lower down the order. He feels Tilak Varma played fantastically today, and in the last game, he was not 100 per cent and was not timing it well, and hence, he was retired out. He feels in these games, Powerplays are crucial, and he feels they couldn't really capitalize on a couple of overs. Feels good to have Bumrah back in the team. He says the message to the boys is to go out there and express themselves and the team backs them always.

Earlier in the game, Hardik Pandya won the toss and put RCB into bat. Trent Boult got MI the perfect start by knocking over Phil Salt in the very first over but that was as good as it got for MI in the Powerplay as Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal counterattacked and got away plenty of boundaries and they put on a 91-run stand. Padikkal perished but Kohli stitched another 48-run stand with skipper Patidar as RCB continued to pile on the runs. MI did make a slight comeback with the ball but Patidar and then Jitesh Sharma made sure that RCB got to 200 and then some. Jasprit Bumrah didn't get a wicket on his return but apart from him, everyone else went for at least 10 runs an over.

Mumbai Indians were so close yet so far and just like the previous game, they managed to get into a position from where they could get ahead of the opposition but have ended up falling short again. The opening woes continued as both Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton got into double digits quickly and then perished. Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav tried to rebuild things but Jacks got out and SKY couldn't break free. Tilak Varma came in and tried to be the enforcer, keeping MI afloat but it was Hardik Pandya walked in when the momentum shifted completely. Hardik struck 32 runs off his first 7 balls but with 3 or so overs remaining, both Varma and Pandya got out in quick succession and the lower order simply couldn't find those big hits.

RCB have clutched it in the final couple of overs and what seemed to be heading towards a sureshot victory thrown away, has ended up being a third win out of 4 for RCB. The batters set things up with a mammoth score on board and then the pacers got RCB the perfect start in the first 6 overs by getting rid of both openers. They continued to bowl decently in the first half of the chase and seemed well in control but soon enough, the lack of wickets started to cost them. At one point, they conceded 41 runs in a space of 2 overs but bounced back with wickets. Josh Hazlewood and Krunal Pandya finished things off with a plethora of wickets and they got over the line in the end.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru are back to winning ways and what a way to seal a thrilling victory as well! RCB have now defeated reigning champions KKR at Eden Gardens, CSK after 17 years at Chepauk and now MI after 10 years at the Wankhede, all in the space of just four games and they will be oozing with confidence. On the other hand, heartbreak for MI yet again as they fall short by 12 runs, the same margin that was against LSG as well and once again, their skipper's heroics went in vain.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru win a close game and return to winning ways! Pandya floats it up, slower through the air, on middle and leg, Jasprit Bumrah gets down for a slog sweep but misses and wears it on the pads. Krunal has his hands aloft in celebration. RCB clinch this thriller by 12 runs!

19.5W

OUT! TAKEN! That will do nicely for Royal Challengers Bengaluru! Krunal Pandya lets out a roar and this has been an excellent effort from him under pressure. Krunal does not quite nail the yorker, on middle. It comes out as a low full toss, Dhir gets inside the line and looks to swat it away behind square on the leg side. Fails to get the desired distance and Yash Dayal in the deep runs around to his right to snaffle it.

19.44

FOUR! Edged away and MI are still in it! Pushed through, near the wide guideline on off, Dhir throws his hands at the delivery. Gets an outside edge that flies over short third for a boundary. 13 needed off 2 balls.

Halt! There seems to be a discussion between the square leg umpire and the keeper, Jitesh Sharma. Not quite sure about what. The RCB skipper and the other umpire also get involved and it seems the discussion was regarding the keeper moving about.

19.31

Short ball, on middle and leg, Naman Dhir gets inside the line and pulls it to deep backward square leg for a single. 17 needed off 3 balls.

19.31wd

Stumping chance missed? Krunal Pandya fires in a yorker down the leg side, Trent Boult looks to tickle it away but misses. The keeper, Jitesh Sharma fails to collect it cleanly but the replays show that Boult had his back leg grounded all the way through.

Trent Boult is in next.

19.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Excellent teamwork in the deep! Mumbai Indians are left stunned! There's that suprise bumper from Pandya, at the batter, Deepak Chahar waits back and goes for the pull. Does manage to connect it well but not well enough to clear the fence. Phil Salt at deep mid-wicket, runs around to his left and takes it with a leap inside the fence. His momentum takes him beyond the ropes, but before going over, he lobs it towards Tim David to his left, convering from long on. David does the rest, and Krunal has two in two. Hat-trick ball coming up.

Deepak Chahar walks out to bat now.

19.1W

OUT! TAKEN! An ideal start to the final over for Royal Challengers Bengaluru! Darted across from around the wicket, full in length, Mitchell Santner frees his arms and looks to go down town with a cross-batted lofted stroke. Fails to get enough elevation to clear long off. Tim David near the fence takes a good catch under pressure over his head.

19 needed off the last over. Krunal Pandya has the ball in hand. Can he defend 18 runs?

18.61

Very low full toss, on middle and leg, Mitchell Santner gets low and swipes it towards wide long on for just a single. MI go into the final over, needing 19 runs.

18.56

SIX! A crucial strike from Mitchell Santner! Josh misses his yorker and ends up bowling a low full toss, angling across, Mitchell goes deep in the crease and carves it over extra cover for a six. MI need 20 off 7 balls.

18.41

Gets it right up there, at the stumps, denying Dhir the opportunity to get under the ball. Naman knocks it down the ground to long on for a single.

18.30

Executes the yorker to perfection, outside off, Naman crouches and looks to squeeze it away on the off side but does not get any bat on it.

18.21

Full, at the pads, Mitchell Santner flicks it to deep backward square leg for a single.

Mitchell Santner is in next.

18.1W

OUT! STRAIGHT TO THE FIELDER! 2 wickets in 4 balls for RCB and this is a massive blow to MI! Josh keeps it very full, slanting in, Hardik clears his front leg and tries to get under the ball. Gets this one right off the bottom part of the bat. Skies it straight up towards deep mid-wicket where Liam Livingstone settles under it and does the rest. Hardik departs for a quickfire 42 off 15 with Mumbai Indians needing 28 runs off 11 balls.

Who will bowl the crucial 19th over? Josh Hazlewood or Krunal Pandya? Or somebody else like Liam Livingstone? It will be Hazlewood. Make or break for both sides in this over.

Kumar nails the yorker this time, on off and Naman can only jam it out beside the pitch on the off side. 13 runs off Bhuvi's final over. Mumbai Indians need 28 runs off 12 balls.

17.56

SIX! BOOM! What a strike first up! Bhuvneshwar Kumar misses his yorker slightly and pays the price. Dhir is allowed to get under the ball and with a straight bat, he thumps it back over the bowler's head for a flat six.

Commentary

All set for the chase to commence. Rajat Patidar leads his troops out to the centre. It will be the left-hand right-hand combination of Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma to open the innings for MI. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will kickstart proceedings with the new ball for RCB. Rohit will face the first ball. Here we go!

.... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the track has played true so far, with batters able to hit through the line, and there’s not been much to suggest that MI can’t chase this down. Taking the pace off has proven effective, and that’s likely to be the key for RCB’s bowlers in the second innings. Back in a bit for the chase.

Virat Kohli is in for a chat. He says he enjoyed the batting, especially after losing an early wicket. He feels Devdutt Padikkal played phenomenally well, as he played with so much intent and helped them get some good momentum. He says his strength is to get the feel of the ball early and then try to innovate and accelerate and keep up with the demand of T20 cricket. Reckons when an early wicket falls, someone needs to keep the paddle on the accelerator and that’s where Devdutt’s role was crucial and he played really well. Hopes Devdutt gets a big score because he is timing it very well. Says Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma also played well. Feels that it was always difficult to bowl with the shorter boundary on one side. He feels the pitch is not a straightforward batting deck and the ball is stopping a bit, so he feels it’s not going to be an easy chase

Patidar took the MI attack to the cleaners and ensured RCB stayed on course. He found able support from Jitesh Sharma, and the duo launched a fierce assault to give their side the finish they were after. For MI, Jasprit Bumrah, playing his first game of the season, went for 10 runs in his first over but bounced back brilliantly at the death, conceding just 14 runs in his final two overs. Though he finished wicketless, he was the most economical bowler on the night.

From there, it was all RCB, as Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal took the attack to them. Once the field restrictions eased, MI managed to pull things back, conceding only 39 runs in the 6 overs that followed the Powerplay. Hardik Pandya led the charge with a double strike before his counterpart, Rajat Patidar, hit back with a counter-attacking blow of his own.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be quite pleased to have posted 221 on the board! While the final over yielded just 8 runs, you'd take that against Jasprit Bumrah, but 70 runs came off the last 5 overs to cap off a strong finish. Earlier, after the toss fell their way, MI struck early by dismissing Phil Salt on just the second ball, but that turned out to be their only success in the Powerplay.

NOT OUT! But it only matters in terms of wickets not in terms of runs. Jasprit Bumrah spears in a perfect yorker from outside off and tries to angle it in towards the stumps. Jitesh Sharma just walks across and looks to swing it away on the leg side but the ball sneaks under the bat and pings him on the pads. A loud shout and the finger goes up as Jitesh gets across to the other side and takes the review. The ball's clearly passing under the bat but Ball Tracking shows that the impact was outside off. Jitesh remains unbeaten and Royal Challengers Bengaluru finish with 221/5 on the board!

Given LBW but Jitesh Sharma has taken the review! The Ball Tracking shows that the impact is outside off. So, a dot to close out the innings.

19.56

SIX! That's well struck! Bumrah misses the straight yorker by a couple of inches as Jitesh goes deep in his crease and just to the off side in order to get under the ball and whacks it over wide long on for a biggie.

19.40

Short of a length, quick and over middle, angling in, Jitesh Sharma sets up for the lap but has to adjust and is beaten for pace and bounce.

19.31

Bumrah goes a bit wider on the crease and darts in a yorker towards the middle and leg stump line, Tim David stays back and squeezes it out through cover-point for just one more.

19.21

Full and straight at the stumps, Sharma is unable to get under the very low full toss and just swings it away to deep mid-wicket for a single.

19.10

A sharp bumper now, bowled right at the batter. Jitesh Sharma looks to get inside the line but is rushed and gets it off the body to the left of the keeper.

Tim David is in next. Jasprit Bumrah (3-0-21-0) to bowl the final over.

OUT! CAUGHT! Wow, what a grab from the keeper! Trent Boult bowls this one on a good length and spears it well across off. Rajat Patidar shuffles across but gets cramped and just tries to lap it away. The ball goes off the top edge and straight back over the keeper's head. Ryan Rickelton turns quickly and races after it with the pads on before finally diving full stretch and snaring it three-fourths way to the fence. Patidar departs for a stellar 64 off 32 balls.

18.61wd

WIDE! Another attempted wide bumper and Rajat Patidar is unable to reach for the uppercut and it is deemed as too high.

18.51

Hard length outside off, Jitesh hangs back and goes hard at it but mistimes it towards cover for a single.

18.40

Bangs it in short now and outside off, Sharma walks across again and looks to uppercut but fails to connect.

18.36

SIX! Oh, right off the stumps, that is sensational! Fuller in length, on off and middle, Jitesh Sharma moves late and goes past the off stump before just lapping it up and over fine leg for another biggie. This is now Boult's most expensive spell ever in IPL.

18.20

Full and wide again from Boult, gets it good enough as Jitesh slashes the drive to covers.

18.16

SIX! That is a surreal shot! Full and outside off, not a bad ball, landing just inside the tramline but Jitesh Sharma gets across and on one knee before playing half a sweep and smashes it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie.

18.11wd

WIDE! Trying to go full and wide and across the right-hander but spills it well beyond the tramline outside off.

Gets away with that one and just 6 singles come off that over! Juicy full toss over middle and leg stump, Jitesh Sharma gets inside the line but miscues it just behind square leg for another single.

17.51

No timing on that one! Bumrah nails this one full and around middle, Patidar stays put and swings through the line but gets it off the toe end of the bat towards long off for another single.

17.41

A genuine full toss this one but it was darted in quite low and into the batter. Sharma could only manage to hit it down to long off for a fourth straight single.

17.31

Full and straight, Patidar clips the dipping low full toss towards deep mid-wicket for just one more.

17.21

Full and wide, in the blockhole and just inside the tramline, Sharma throws the kitchen sink at it but gets an inside edge through short fine leg for a run.

17.11

Hard length around leg, Patidar nonchalantly flicks it off the hips and to the right of deep backward square leg for just a single. Actually, Patidar slipped while turning for the second.

Jasprit Bumrah returns to the attack. 2-0-15-0 so far for Bumrah.

OUT!

OUT!

Bangs it into the deck and slides it across, Tilak hops and reaches out to go up and over on the off side. Nails the yorker and it keeps coming into the left-hander from over the wicket, Tilak looks to turn it away but misses on the inside edge and the ball sneaks through his legs. Dayal is done for the night. He ends with figures of 4-0-46-2. Mumbai Indians require 41 runs in 18 balls.

A slight halt in play and it seems like we are having a change of ball. The current one seems to have lost its shape and a different ball is now is picked up by the umpires.

16.56

SIX! Clean as a whistle! Neither short nor full from Yash, it sits up to be hit, on off, Tilak presses back and pumps it over long on for a biggie. 11 runs off the over with a ball to go.

FIFTY FOR TILAK! A well-constructed half-century. His 7th in IPL but the first of the season! Yash digs it in short, over off, Tilak waits for the ball to arrive and taps the ball on its head to the right of deep mid-wicket for a quick couple of runs.

16.32

Gets it right up there, very full, on off, Varma thrashes it along the ground to left of deep point. Krunal Pandya is quick across the turf in the deep and cuts it off with a slide. Two runs taken. Krunal seems to have pulled his back as he got back up on his feet.

16.20

Well bowled! There is that back-of-the-hand slower one, bowled into the wicket and wide on off, Tilak waits on it and looks to slap it away on the off side but misses.

16.11

Missed out! Dayal attempts a yorker but it comes out as a full toss, at the pads, there to be put away, Hardik Pandya whips it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

STRATEGIC BREAK! Wow, this is turning out to be one of the games of the 2025 IPL and against a fair bit of odds, at this stage, MI seem to be in front. They have scored 54 runs in the last 3 overs and now need a further 52 in the remaining 4 overs. Hardik Pandya has just come and played a blinder with Tilak Varma being relentless at the other end as well. RCB will know that a wicket here and one quiet over and they will be back on top. 15.61wd

11.21

Wow, what a let off again for Suryakumar Yadav and he will certainly be thanking his stars. Slower one from Yash Dayal, from the back-of-the-hand and on a good length around off. SKY goes right across the off stump and looks to swing it away but ends up skying it high up and just to the leg side. The bowler and the keeper both charge towards it and neither of them calls for it. It ends up being a collision instead of a simple catch which was probably for the keeper and hopefully, Dayal and Jitesh Sharma are both fine as the physio is out to perform a concussion check. SKY also gets a single here.

Will Jacks is in at number 3.

OUT! TIMBER! Yash Dayal has the last laugh here and Rohit's fast start has been brought to a halt! Full and straight around off and middle at 138 clicks. Too full and swings back in late as Rohit Sharma looks to flick across the line and ends up playing all around it. The ball knocks the leg stump out of the ground as Dayal goes up in celebration. Sharma departs for 17 (9) and MI are 21/1!

0.51

Back of a length and outside off, slashed away down to wide third man for a single now.

0.30

Nagging length in the channel, Sharma just prods halfway and blocks it into the off side.

0.22

Fractionally shorter, on the pads as well, Rohit whips it away off the hips and behind square leg for a couple of runs to get going.

0.10

EDGED BUT SAFE! Encouraging signs for Bhuvi right away! At a gentle 128 clicks, on a fullish length and on off, this one swings away and Rohit Sharma pushes at it with soft hands. The ball takes the outside edge but just goes down in front of first slip.

OUT!

18.16

16.36

SIX! Patidar has picked the bones out of that one! A bit slower and shorter, wide outside off, Patidar knew exactly what was coming and just shuffled past the off stump and stylishly swung it away over deep mid-wicket for another biggie.

16.26

SIX! A nothing delivery that and the RCB skipper notches up his FIFTY in style, his second of this season. Floated up, in the slot and wide outside off, Patidar just hammers it through the line and back over the bowler's head for a colossal six.

15.52

Patidar has hit that hard but it's well-fielded in the deep! Full and straight, Patidar keeps the front leg out of the way and hammers it flat over Boult's head and to the left of long on. Hardik Pandya slides across and saves a couple of runs for his side.

15.41

Another slower one into the pitch but this time it is at the bodyline, Sharma rides the bounce and swivel-pulls it to the right of deep mid-wicket for a single.

15.36

SIX! Hit just well enough! Full and wide now from Boult but it turns out to be a half-volley, Jitesh just extends his arms and lofts it flat and over the leaping fielder at deep cover for a biggie.

15.24

FOUR! Lovely placement! Slow and short, well outside off, Jitesh Sharma waits back well before hopping up and playing the uppercut to the left of deep backward point for a boundary.

Goes full and lands it on the popping crease on leg stump, Rajat Patidar manages to chip it down to long on for a single.

The long off fielder gets around and cuts it off but Jitesh Sharma wants to sneak in the second run. He is almost halfway down the track when Rajat sends him back. The throw goes to the batting end and Ryan Rickelton is quick to take the bails off but Jitesh is in with a dive.

14.54

FOUR! Innovative and mighty effective! Hardik keeps it well outside off, Rajat takes a step across the stumps and fetches it from outside off. Laps it behind square on the leg side and finds the fence.

With just about 5 overs to go, it will be interesting to see which team can head into the break on a high...

Hardik bends his back and bangs it in short, around the wide guideline, Liam Livingstone shuffles across his stumps to play the scoop but the ball is not that full for the shot for him to get under it. The ball gets big on him and he gets it high on the bat. Lobs it tamely towards short third where Jasprit Bumrah takes a couple of steps back and takes it around his waist. 200th wicket of Hardik's T20 career.

14.20

Continues bowling it wide outside off, Liam Livingstone walks across to scoop it over short fine leg but misses and wears it on the body.

The line does not allow him to do so and he skies it straight up towards deep mid-wicket where Naman Dhir runs in off the ropes and takes the skier. Kohli falls for 67 (42) and RCB are now 143/3.

Pushed through from around the wicket, right in the slot, on off, Patidar gets under the ball and with a clean swing of the bat, pumps it over long off for a six.

13.51

Fuller around off, Kolhi agains charges down, looks to go big, but he can't connect as he bottom edge it into the vacant short mid-wicket region. The bowler runs to cut it off. Single taken.

13.42

Beautifully bowled!! Tossed up just outside off, inviting the batter to go big. Kohli comes down the track and looks to go over long on. He can't connect as he gets an outside edge that flies fine of short third. The short third fielder eventually cuts it off. Two runs taken.

13.34

FOUR! Not that far away from going to hand! Speared in, on midlde, Kohli premeditates as he steps down the track. The bat turns in his hand as he looks to go back over the bowler's head. Santner stretches his right hand out as he leaps but the ball evades him and races away for a boundary.

13.21

Slows down the pace, does Santner. Slower through the air, shorter in length on middle, Patidar pushes it off the back foot to deep extra cover for a single.

13.16

SIX! A biggie right after the break! Darted in from around the wicket, right in the arc, on middle and leg, Patidar swings through the line and deposits it over long on for a six.

STRATEGIC BREAK! A lot has changed from the first 6 overs but RCB are still in a good space and with just 2 wickets lost, they can really start to go after the bowling now. MI and their spinners have done well enough to bring the scoring rate under 10 runs per over but they need wickets if they are to stop RCB from notching up that 200-run mark. 12.50

Back of length outside off, Patidar drives it off the back foot, back to the bowler. Dot ball.

12.44

FOUR! Smart batting! Not the right option by Hardik, though, with third man inside the circle. Bangs it in short, around off, Rajat hops and is airborne while playing the shot. Glides it over the keeper for a boundary.

A bit of a halt in the play as Rajat Patidar has got that last shot back onto his jaw and probably the grill of the helmet. Not much reaction from Patidar initially but that must be painful. The physio is out to have a look and thankfully, Patidar is fine. We are good to continue.

12.30

Oh, that's nasty! Full wide outside off, Patidar puts his front leg outside off, sits down and goes for the paddle scoop. He connects it and hits it straight back on his own helmet. That must have hurt. A mandatory concussion test follows. A bit of a break in play.

12.22

Full pace off delivery outside off, Patidar lofts this one over covers, between deep extra cover and long off. He timed that beautifully as he didn't overhit it. Two runs added to the kitty, as the long off fielder cuts that off near the boundary.

OUT! CAUGHT! Immaculate judgement from Will Jacks and young Vignesh Puthur continues to impress. Having been hit for a six just a couple of balls ago, Puthur still tosses this one right up to the batter, around the leg stump. Devdutt Padikkal makes a bit of room and sits down to get under the ball, but ends up launching it a mile high towards the long on fence. Jacks settles himself just inside the ropes and takes it safely. Padikkal departs for a well-made 37 off 22 balls and RCB are now 95/2!

STRATEGIC BREAK! Mumbai's Powerplay struggles have resurfaced once again tonight. While they did manage to dismiss Phil Salt early, they have failed to apply any real pressure on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say that the pair of Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal has simply not allowed them to. Hardik Pandya has tried to mix things up with his bowling changes, but the pacers haven’t found much assistance from the surface. The spinners, though, have found some grip and turn, which was evident in the solitary over of spin from Will Jacks. An exciting phase of play lies ahead as MI look to wrest back some control. SIX! That is swatted away! Banged in well short and around off, it is the slower one as well. Padikkal just holds steady and rides the bounce, forcing the pull shot over deep mid-wicket for another biggie. Padikkal seems a changed batter this season, so much more aggressive.

5.36

SIX! Smacked away! Chahar goes into the pitch a bit and Devdutt Padikkal just shimmies across to the off side and heaves it over long on for a biggie. RCB off to a flyer here!

5.21

Deepak Chahar (1-0-9-0) is back on.

3.11

Risky single! Starts from around the wicket does Bumrah, on a good length, on middle, Devdutt Padikkal pats it towards mid on and sets off for a quick single. Hardik Pandya swoops in and picks it up cleanly. Fires in a throw at the bowling end but misses as Padikkal gets in with a dive. It would have been interesting had the throw hit.

FOUR! Phil Salt and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are on their way! Boult steams in from over the wicket and goes full in search of some swing. Serves it a bit too full, on off, Salt cracks the drive to the left of mid off for a boundary.

All in readiness for the game to begin! The umpires are out in the middle, and so are the MI players. It will be Virat Kohli and Phil Salt to open the innings for RCB. Trent Boult has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

The skipper of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajat Patidar, says he would have opted to bowl first as well, but is content with being asked to bat. He shares that the surface looks like a typical Mumbai wicket and doesn’t expect it to change much over the course of the game. Patidar reckons it’s all about playing good cricket and mentions that the team is looking forward to the contest. He admits that bowling at this venue can be tough but states that he has full confidence in his bowling unit to get the job done. Informs that they are unchanged for this game.

The captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, says he will bowl first. Reckons that this is a good track, and he expects the dew to make its presence felt. He says that the wicket stays the same pretty much throughout the game and sometimes, if dew comes in, then batting becomes easy. Feels that the team needs to get some rhythm, and they should make smart choices and they should play good cricket. Adds that they are missing out on certain key moments. He says Mumbai is their fortress and the support is always there, plus his team knows the conditions, and he feels it’s a good chance to entertain the crowd. Informs that Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma are back in the side. He feels that they are their two highly experienced players, and it’s a big boost for the team.

Impact players nominated by Royal Challengers Bengaluru - Suyash Sharma, Rasikh Salam, Swastik Chikara, Jacob Bethell and Swapnil Singh.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Unchanged Playing XI) - Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (C), Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Tim David, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, Yash Dayal.

Impact players nominated by the Mumbai Indians - Rohit Sharma, Corbin Bosch, Ashwani Kumar, Raj Angad Bawa and Robin Minz.

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI) - Ryan Rickelton (WK), Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma (In for Raj Angad Bawa), Hardik Pandya (C), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah (In for Ashwani Kumar), Vignesh Puthur.

TOSS - Mumbai Indians have won the toss and they will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Natalie Germanos is near the deck. She mentions that the first match at this venue, where KKR were bowled out for just 116, was played on pitch number 6, but tonight, the action shifts to pitch number 8. Adds that the square boundaries are slightly uneven, with 66 metres on one side, 61 metres on the other, while the straight boundary measures 74 metres. States that it is a windy evening in Mumbai, and Simon Katich points out that the breeze could influence whether dew becomes a factor later in the game. Shares that the surface is rock hard with an even covering of grass, although it is a touch bare at both ends. Tells that typically, there's not much on offer for spinners here, and he expects it to be a high-scoring affair. He also notes that MI have struggled to make early breakthroughs in the Powerplay, a stark contrast to RCB, who have been successful up front thanks to the efforts of Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Ends by saying that it will be interesting to see if there's any movement through the air because of the breeze.

We are definitely in for a treat tonight, as it will be a battle of pace bowlers, with Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar, and Dayal on one side and Bumrah, Boult, and Chahar on the other. Who will emerge victorious? We shall find out. Toss and team news coming up shortly...

On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bengaluru had got off to a great start to the season, winning 2 tough away fixtures, but then they lost their first home game quite convincingly as the top order collapsed on a wicket that had some assistance for the pace bowlers. In their batting, everyone has had a fair share of contribution in the 3 games, as different individuals have stood up in different games. However, they would hope for their top order to sustain against Trent Boult and Co. On the bowling part, Josh Hazlewood has clearly been the pick of the bowlers, and he has been ably supported by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yash Dayal. Bhuvneshwar and Hazlewood should enjoy bowling with the new ball at Wankhede, as there is always something for pacers in the Powerplay at this venue.

Mumbai Indians haven’t had the best of starts to the season, as they have lost 3 out of the 4 games. Their only win has come at home, and they would be hoping to win their 2nd home fixture to gain some momentum for the season ahead. Their batting has had its struggles, as apart from Suryakumar Yadav, none of the batters has shown any consistency. Ryan Rickelton did get a good score in the last outing at Wankhede. So, he must be having a good feeling about this game. On the bowling part, their captain, Hardik Pandya, has bowled effectively, using his cutters to good effect. Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Ashwani Kumar should enjoy bowling at Wankhede, as they did in the last home game where they bowled out KKR for 116. But the biggest boost for MI for this game is that their premier bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is fit and ready to go, and this should do their confidence a world of good.

Hello and welcome to match number 20 of the Indian Premier League 2025. It’s time for a Monday night blockbuster as the Mumbai Indians take on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium. MI must be a touch short on confidence after not being able to close out the chase against LSG in their last game. On the other hand, RCB are coming into this game on the back of a crushing loss against GT at home.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2025 IPL season continues to provide us with some fascinating encounters and what better way to kickstart a new week with a clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Two teams that feature a couple of modern greats, both of whom have led these two sides in the past but have now become more of an inspiration for the next generation of stars. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have had their share of highs and lows in this rivalry but this time, it will be Hardik Pandya vs Rajat Patidar. The last 5 encounters between these two sides have been fairly one-sided with RCB edging it out 3-2, but MI have won the latest two encounters. Talking a bit more about MI, they have had yet another sluggish start to the season, winning just one of their first 4 games and that star-studded batting line-up has clicked enough. Suryakumar Yadav has been one consistent name for MI with the bat but their opener are having difficulties and with Rohit Sharma a bit out of touch and also suffering from a niggle, lot rests on the middle order. Pandya did show promise last time around but he has been much more effective with the ball than the bat. They do have a good pace attack and with Jasprit Bumrah added back to the squad, their bowling should be up to full strength pretty soon. On the other hand, RCB suffered their first loss of the season against GT last time around but they've already won their opening two away games and will be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins on the road. The batting has been hit and miss but the likes of Liam Livingstone and Tim David have started to come to the party. The bowling does need to improve and they need more wickets up top. Both teams are coming off losses into this game and will be itching to pick up two points. Who do you think will come out on top in this classical IPL rivalry this time around?
