Commentary

The gold has glittered at Wankhede, and it's with the blue shade of the home side. A commanding win for Mumbai Indians as they get off the mark on the points table with a big win. KKR will be going back to the drawing board to reassess their strategies and come back strongly in their next outing when they host SRH at home, a couple of days later. Well then, that is a wrap from this classic clash. But worry not, games come thick and fast in the IPL as we move into the new month of 2025. April kicks off with another belter of a game lined up for you as the Lucknow Super Giants take on the Punjab Kings in Match number 13 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium of Lucknow. Both teams are coming on the back of winning momentum. That game will be played on Tuesday, April 1st, and the first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). But do make sure you mark your presence for the pre-match analysis and an exciting build-up. But from here, we take your leave. Take care, cheers!

The debutant, Ashwani Kumar, wins the PLAYER OF THE MATCH award for a brilliant four-wicket haul, and dismissing some of the key players of the KKR batting unit. He says that he is delighted to get this opportunity. He credits his journey from a small village to the grand stage of Wankhede to years of hard work and dedication. He admits to feeling a bit nervous before the game but is determined to make the people back home proud. He vows to keep contributing and win games for Mumbai Indians in the matches to come.

The captain of Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, is up for a chat now. Begins by expressing his satisfaction at winning at home, and says everyone chipped in nicely. Adds it is challenging to pick one guy here and there. Mentions that this wicket offered more. Appreciates Ashwani Kumar and says he was brilliant with the ball. Further adds, it is all about the scouts as the MI scouts have travelled a lot and have picked up the talented players. Says Kumar got a good movement in the practice match that they played and mentions that with the kind of options that he has, they backed him. Says they have a team which blends well with young energy and experience and it feels good when youngsters step up responsibly.

The Presentation ceremony...

Ryan Rickelton of the Mumbai Indians is in for a chat now. He acknowledges that the ball was nibbling around early on and feels fortunate that Rohit Sharma got a few away to ease the pressure. Playing at Wankhede for the first time, he describes the experience as unbelievable and is eager to enjoy his time here. He is keen to observe and learn from the likes of Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik. Rickelton lauds the bowlers for executing their plans brilliantly, adjusting to the pace of the wicket, and delivering a phenomenal performance to restrict the opposition. When asked about Suryakumar Yadav’s trademark scoops, Ryan admits that those are shots he can’t even think of attempting and he marvels at SKY’s ability to pull them off so effortlessly.

The captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane, admits it was a collective batting failure on a good wicket to bat on, with not much assistance for the bowlers. He feels 190 would have been a good score and acknowledges that losing four wickets in the Powerplay made it difficult to consolidate. Stresses the importance of adapting quickly, and as a batter, you need to use the pace and bounce effectively here at Wankhede. He credits the bowlers for their efforts but concedes that they simply didn’t have enough runs to work with.

Earlier in the game, after winning the toss, MI inserted KKR to bat, who promptly lost both openers cheaply, including Rahane falling to Ashwani Kumar's very first IPL delivery. Despite promising signs from Angkrish Raghuvanshi, KKR crumbled to 45-5, forcing them to deploy Manish Pandey as an Impact Sub for batting reinforcement. The wickets continued to tumble despite Ramandeep Singh's late resistance with some lusty blows. Ashwani Kumar had a dream debut and finished with a stunning four-wicket haul in his IPL baptism, by dismissing big names like Rahane, Rinku, Russell, and Manish Pandey. It was a performance in unison by the MI bowlers that contributed to reducing KKR to a meager 116.

Mumbai Indians used the modest chase as a perfect platform to rediscover their batting form, especially in the top order. Though Rohit Sharma fell early, Ryan Rickelton shook off a hesitant start to find his touch, which is a promising development for MI as they aim to ascend the points table. KKR, meanwhile, must confront their middle-order fragility, with underwhelming contributions from key players like Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, exposing a weakness that demands urgent attention if they're to remain competitive in the tournament.

One solid partnership was all Mumbai Indians needed, and the Rickelton-Jacks combination delivered emphatically, deflating KKR's spirits. Rickelton raced to a commanding fifty while Jacks offered calculated stability from the other end until his departure. The finishing touches came from Suryakumar Yadav, who unleashed his signature strokes to guide MI across the line with confidence with 8 wickets in hand.

KKR's below-par total desperately needed early Powerplay magic to defend with the ball, but despite Spencer Johnson's probing new-ball spell that troubled Rickelton on both edges, those game-changing cluster of wickets never materialized. A few confident strokes quickly settled Rickelton's initial nerves, and while Andre Russell eventually claimed Rohit Sharma's scalp, MI had already seized control with a commanding 55/1 Powerplay platform.

Just like an employee sniffing a chance to log off from work on a hectic Monday, Mumbai Indians have finished off this game with an emphatic win with 7.1 overs remaining. Jokes apart, this win has inflated MI's net run rate to leaps and bounds, into the positive territory, while KKR, with this humongous defeat, have been pushed back to the bottom of the table.

SIX! Suryakumar Yadav finishes the game off in trademark fashion! On a good length, on middle and leg, Suryakumar Yadav just uses the pace on the ball. Gets low and manages to get under the ball. Laps it over deep fine leg for a six. Mumbai Indians register a thumping win and are off the mark in the 2025 IPL!

FOUR! Up and over! On a short of a good length, pace taken off, this sits up to be hit. Suryakumar Yadav waits back and pulls it over mid-wicket for a boundary.

Commentary

We are back for MI's reply. Ajinkya Rahane leads his troops out onto the middle. It will be the left-hand right-hand combination of Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma to open the innings for Mumbai. Spencer Johnson will kickstart proceedings with the new ball for the Knight Riders. A slight hold-up as Rohit is unhappy with some movement behind the bowler's arm.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the bowlers have set the game up beautifully for MI, and this could finally be the night they notch their first win of the season. If they find themselves in a position to do so, they might even look to push hard and give their net run rate a much-needed boost. The new ball did offer some movement, something KKR will be eager to exploit early on. They have already used their Impact Player in Manish Pandey, which means they won’t have the option of bringing in Vaibhav Arora, who usually plays that role. Back in a bit for the chase.

Ashwani Kumar of the Mumbai Indians is up for a chat. He begins by expressing his delight and says he is feeling great. Mentions there was some pressure, but the atmosphere in the team is such that everything went alright. Says he planned a lot and also mentions about his teammates telling him to just go out and express himself. On Russell's wicket, he says Hardik Pandya told him to bowl into the pitch, but admits it didn't come off well, and then he was told to bowl into the body of the right-hander. Says the situation was such that Russell went for a big shot and got out. Is all smiles and says everyone in his village will be watching and he will have a word with them after the game.

No partnership of real substance materialized for the defending champions, and every move Hardik Pandya made worked wonders for the home side. Only a couple of KKR batters managed to cross 20, which perfectly sums up the night for the away side. There were a couple of blemishes in the field from debutant Ashwani Kumar, but with four wickets to his name, he certainly had a dream night. With figures of 4 for 24, Kumar has the best figures by an Indian on IPL debut.

A dominant bowling display from the Mumbai Indians on their homecoming! When it’s your night, everything seems to fall into place, and when it isn’t, it unravels just as it has for KKR. Powerplay bowling was a major concern heading into this clash for MI, but they turned it around in emphatic fashion, dismantling KKR’s top order early. The Knight Riders stuck to their aggressive approach, but it proved costly as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

16.2W

OUT! TAKEN! The Kiwi responds in style and KKR have been bowled out on a paltry 116! He bowls it very slow, and keeps the ball away from the batter's reach, outside off. Ramandeep Singh stays leg side of the ball and looks to loft it over covers. But, he is through his shot very early. Hence, a thick outside edge is found and the ball lobs off towards the short third fielder. Skipper Hardik Pandya takes a dolly!

16.16

SIX! Very important runs these for KKR! A rare loosener from Santner, on the shorter side, on off, Ramandeep Singh goes deep into the crease and pulls it well behind long on for a cracking six.

15.40

15.30

Full and on middle and leg, flicked away to deep mid-wicket. Ramandeep decides to stay on strike.

15.26

SIX! BANG! Back of a length, on the bodyline, Ramandeep Singh stands tall and nails the pull shot behind deep mid-wicket for a six.

15.12

Had Boult collected the ball and hit the stumps with the ball in hand, it would have been curtains for KKR's innings! Good length, on the stumps, Ramandeep Singh mistimes his pull shot, but manages to clear mid-wicket. The deep mid-wicket fielder runs across to his left and cuts it off. The batters hare back for the second and the throw comes in flat towards Boult at the bowling end. He fumbles to collect it and breaks the stumps without the ball in hand. Two taken as Spencer makes home.

Trent Boult (3-0-14-1) returns to the attack. Rohit Sharma comes in as the Impact Player for the Mumbai Indians, replacing Vignesh Puthur.

DROPPED! Ashwani Kumar again! A dream day with the ball, but, with a couple of blips in the field for the debutant! Outside leg, full and flat. Ramandeep Singh sweeps but top-edges it towards short fine leg. Ashwani Kumar crouches to take it low, but makes a meal of an easy catch and lets the ball through behind him. A single taken.

14.41

KKR do breach the 100-run mark! Sliding onto the pads, Spencer Johnson turns it away to deep backward square leg for a single.

Spencer Johnson is the last man in for KKR, with all 9s on the board.

14.3W

OUT! TAKEN! Vignesh Puthur gets in on the act now and this is a brilliant catch by Naman Dhir! Puthur offers flight, full and on middle from over the wicket, Rana is lured into the big shot. He gets down on a knee and goes for the slog sweep. Hits it flat and low towards deep mid-wicket. Dhir comes charging in off the ropes and dives ahead to grab it inches off the turf. Kolkata Knight Riders are 99/9.

14.21

More air on this one and a tighter line, at the stumps, Singh clips it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

14.14

FOUR! A boundary right after the break! Puthur tosses it up, full and around off, Singh gets low to get under the ball and goes inside out over extra cover for a boundary.

STRATEGIC BREAK. A very sorry-looking scorecard for KKR, to say the least, on this belter of a wicket. But credit where it is due, it has been a dream debut for Ashwani Kumar. Just imagine picking up wickets of the likes of Rahane, Rinku, Manish, and Dre Russ in your first-ever game. Ramandeep Singh is the only recognised batter left in the tank for KKR, who can hit the ball into the stands. The goal for them should be to bat till the end and get as many runs as possible from here.

STRATEGIC BREAK. The game is firmly in the grip of the Mumbai Indians as they need only 47 runs, with 12 overs remaining. After a scratchy start to his inning, Ryan Rickelton has got his rhythm and is scoring runs at ease now. Whereas, Will Jacks is perfectly providing him a calm hand from the other end. MI will be aiming to chase this down with as many overs in hand as possible, which will dramatically inflate their net run rate. Whereas, for KKR, the writing is pretty much on the wall, as they haven't got those breakthroughs in clusters. Here's Varun Chakaravarthy (2-0-9-0) to continue his spell.

OUT!

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! With that, half of the KKR side is into the dugout now. Captain Hardik Pandya also joins the wicket-taking bandwagon now! Goes through the pull shot, but mistimes it. The ball sails only as far as deep mid-wicket where Naman Dhir runs across to his left and takes a fine grab. Angkrish Raghuvanshi was looking solid in his approach but has to depart now. He goes for 26 (16) and KKR are 45/5.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Number four in Powerplay and the Mumbai Indians are all over the KKR batting unit now. Deepak bowls it on a shortish length, keeping the line of attack around the off stump. The ball lands and climbs on the batter due to that excessive bounce and that's what does Iyer in. He tries to sway away from the line and ramp it but edges it behind to the keeper, and Ryan Rickelton does the rest. Kolkata Knight Riders are 41/4 and are in serious trouble now as Venkatesh Iyer departs on 3 (9).

5.30

Banged short and over the top of off, Venkatesh Iyer leans back and lets it be. Good bounce and carry for Deepak Chahar.

Tries to take the short ball on, but it gets miscued off the splice of the bat. The ball is skied over cover-point where Santner turns around and goes after it. Ends up overrunning it. OUT! CAUGHT! What a start for Ashwani Kumar on his IPL debut! Strikes with his first ball and it is the prized scalp of Ajinkya Rahane. Angling across from over the wicket, on a length, Rahane gets the width he needs and throws his hands at the delivery. Wants to go cover but ends up slicing it towards deep point. Hits it straight down the throat of Tilak Varma there. The ball pops out of the grasp of Verma and lobs behind him. He recovers well and takes it with his right hand on the second attempt. We are all in readiness for this classic clash to get underway, here in the City of Dreams. The Wankhede is buzzing with the sea of blue and a sprinkling of purple here and there. Now then, the two umpires make their way to the middle. Hardik Pandya leads his troops as the Mumbai Indians scatter throughout the park and take their respective fielding positions. Fresh with runs, Quinton de Kock will be partnered by Sunil Narine for the Knight Riders. And it will be Trent Boult to open the attack with the new ball for MI. Who will prevail in this battle of golds? Blue or Purple? Let the games begin. The clock ticks off and here we go...

Impact players nominated by Kolkata Knight Riders - Anrich Nortje, Manish Pandey, Vaibhav Arora, Anukul Roy and Luvnith Sisodia.

Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane (C), Rinku Singh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Sunil Narine (In for Moeen Ali), Andre Russell, Ramandeep Singh, Spencer Johnson, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy.

Impact players nominated by Mumbai Indians - Rohit Sharma, Corbin Bosch, Raj Angad Bawa, Robin Minz and Satyanarayana Raju.

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI) - Ryan Rickelton (WK), Will Jacks (In for Mujeeb Ur Rahman), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (C), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Ashwani Kumar (On IPL debut), Vignesh Puthur (In for Satyanarayana Raju).

The captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane, says that he wanted to bowl first. He says he was a little confused about whether to bowl or bat, but this wicket is usually very good. States there is a little bit of grass on this wicket, but sometimes it’s difficult to read the wicket when there is a breeze going on and with no dew factor. States that their bowling lineup is very good and did really well in the last game. Hopes that the bowlers can perform well in this game, too. Shares that as a team, they are doing very well. He feels every game is an opportunity to do better and improve. Tells that it’s important to start afresh and focus on today’s game and not think too much about previous games. Informs that there’s only one change, with Sunil Narine coming in for Moeen Ali.

The skipper of Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, says it looks like a good track. Says knowing Wankhede, there's uncertainty about the dew coming in. Mentions that this wicket always plays well. Also adds that there are chances of the bowlers getting that early swing. Adds it is a long competition, and they are looking to get into the rhythm gradually. Tells if they do the right things, they will get the desired results. Stresses that they need to calm their nerves a bit and stick to the plans by taking smarter options. Informs Will Jacks comes in, and Ashwani Kumar makes his debut.

TOSS - Mumbai Indians have won the toss and they have elected to BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Nick Knight and Eoin Morgan are inspecting the Wankhede pitch. Morgan says it is an absolute belter of a surface. Observes a good covering of grass, and it is a rock-hard surface, and mentions that the pacers will generate a good bounce and carry. Says it will be interesting to see how the KKR spinners, Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine, bowl on this wicket. Knight then mentions about the dimensions of the park and says one side is slightly shorter than the other.

At the Wankhede, the Mumbai Indians transform into a different beast, just like any team feeding off home turf. History heavily favours the blue and gold over the purples, with a dominant 9-2 lead over KKR in Mumbai. But here’s the twist - recent clashes tell a different story. The Knight Riders have flipped the script, winning four of their last five against MI in both home and away clashes. So, will MI get on the board today in their first home game? Or will KKR win this important away fixture? Let’s find out!

On the other hand, the Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking to win their second straight game on the road. They had a comfortable win against RR in the previous game, where we saw a scintillating knock from Quinton de Kock and a complete bowling performance from their bowlers in the absence of Sunil Narine. They would be hoping for their spin veteran Narine to come back for this game, and even Andre Russell hasn’t yet bowled in this season. So, it will be interesting to see if he is fit enough to bowl today.

For the Mumbai Indians, it’s an important game, and they would feel desperate to get on the board, as they are the only team that hasn’t won a game yet. Their bowling department seems weak on pedigree, and the onus will be on the senior pros, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, to produce some early wickets. It will be interesting to see if they bring back Vignesh Puthur to strengthen the bowling attack. Remember, he had a wonderful outing in the first game and still was left out of the XI in the last game. On the batting front, many of their batters have gotten starts in both of the previous games, but none of them have managed to get a big score. So, who will stand up and set the stage on fire with the bat for MI?

Hello, and a warm welcome to match number 12 between the Mumbai Indians and the Kolkata Knight Riders, which will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This will be the first home game for Mumbai and they would be itching to get their first win of the season. On the other hand, Kolkata will be looking to get back-to-back wins after their thumping win over the Rajasthan Royals.

... MATCH DAY ...

The iconic Wankhede Stadium in the heart of Mumbai is all set to host its first game of the 2025 IPL season and it is a big one as well. The hosts, from the city of dreams, Mumbai Indians take on the visitors, from the city of joy, Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 12 of the competition and it is the first home game for MI. Mumbai Indians have played two and lost two so far, which would be a cause for concern if it had been any other franchise but MI have had this history in the past decade or so of starting slow and then making a late charge for the playoffs but losing too many games early on can be a big mental blow to take as well. MI have played a couple of away games thus far, losing to the likes of CSK and GT and in both matches, the batting has been more of a concern than the bowling, even without Jasprit Bumrah, who might be unavailable for this contest as well. The opening pair is certainly the main area to improve and both Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton will be happy to be playing at Wankhede, on a red soil pitch which should have true bounce and be batting friendly. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav have shown glimpses of their prowess but those two will be expected to play the bigger role throughout the tournament as skipper Hardik Pandya looks to improve with the bat as well. On the bowling front, Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult are doing a good job along with Hardik as well but the lack of depth, especially with Mitchell Santner being the only experienced spinner and Mujeeb Ur Rahman struggling to hit his best levels. MI will be hoping that Vignesh Puthur is fit for this game as he had a fine IPL debut against CSK. Moving onto KKR, then and they also started their campaign with a shaky loss against RCB but managed to recover quickly with a fine all-round showing against RR away from home. The bowling was clinical as four bowlers picked up a couple of wickets each and Spencer Johnson finished with a wicket to his name as well. Then with the bat, Quinton de Kock was in full flow and made an unbeaten 97 in a chase of just 152 to power KKR home to a comfortable win. Given that Wankhede is the venue for this game, it could turn out to be a close contest as batters should have a field day but both the pacers and spinners will get good bounce off the pitch. Going on recent form, KKR will be the favorites but if that top order gets going for MI, it could be a real run-fest. Who do you think will come out on top in the battle of multiple title-holders?
