Commentary

That wraps this contest, and it's Punjab Kings who continue their unbeaten streak, joining RCB and DC as the only teams yet to taste defeat this season. A clinical all-round performance sees them climb to second place on the points table, while LSG suffer their second loss in three games. Next up in the Indian Premier League, all eyes turn to Bengaluru, where the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is set to host its first match of the season. It’s a high-octane showdown as Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on the Gujarat Titans in Match 14 on April 2, 2025. The action kicks off at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but be sure to tune in early for all the buildup. Until then, it's goodbye and see you soon!

Prabhsimran Singh is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his outstanding knock of 69 off 34 balls. He hails Ricky Ponting as a legend, appreciating his constant focus on the positives. He emphasizes that Ponting’s mindset is purely about winning, with no room for doubts or 'ifs.' Mentions that the team has been encouraged to back their natural games and express themselves freely. Prabhsimran also highlights the IPL as a crucial platform for aspiring cricketers, providing an opportunity to achieve the ultimate dream of representing India.

Shreyas Iyer, the victorious skipper of Punjab Kings, says this is the kind of start they needed and appreciates every player for contributing as a unit. Mentions that there is no right combination and says all the teams have equal potential to win games, but what matters is to click as per the plan. Says he likes to focus on the present and this inning goes past as history and he looks forward to the next one.

It's time for the Presentation Ceremony...

Nehal Wadhera is in for a chat next. He reflects on how much they needed this win and credits the team for an all-round performance. He mentions that he didn’t feel too many nerves and, in fact, didn’t even know he was playing today, bringing just one jersey. He praises Shreyas Iyer’s remarkable batting and leadership, acknowledging how Iyer kept encouraging him to play his natural game. On his transition from MI to PBKS, Wadhera says that his experience over the past two years has prepared him for this opportunity, and he is focused on finishing games for his new side. He highlights Ricky Ponting as one of the best coaches he has worked with, emphasizing how Ponting’s positive mindset and words of encouragement help boost his confidence.

Rishabh Pant, the skipper of Lucknow Super Giants, is in for a chat. He admits they fell 20-25 runs short but acknowledges that it's part and parcel of the game. Playing their first home match of the season, they are still assessing the conditions. He points out that losing early wickets made it tough to post a big total and mentions that the idea was to get a slower wicket, and the slower balls did grip and stop. He concludes that they weren’t good enough on the day but remains optimistic, noting that it's still early in the tournament and they are figuring out a few things.

Earlier in the game, Punjab Kings made a fiery start, dismantling LSG’s top order and leaving the hosts struggling at 35/3. However, Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni stepped up under pressure, stabilizing the innings with a crucial 54-run partnership. Their efforts were further reinforced by David Miller and Abdul Samad, with Badoni anchoring the innings until the final over. These vital stands of 54, 30, and 47 propelled Lucknow Super Giants to a competitive total of 171/7. While Punjab kept things tight at the death, ensuring the innings didn’t spiral out of control, Arshdeep Singh endured an expensive spell but made up for it with three key wickets, receiving solid support from the rest of the bowling unit.

Lucknow Super Giants had little to celebrate throughout the innings, apart from a moment of brilliance in the field when Ayush Badoni and Ravi Bishnoi combined to dismiss Prabhsimran Singh with a stunning effort at the boundary. However, Punjab’s dominance never wavered. Once Prabhsimran departed, Nehal Wadhera seamlessly took over, keeping the momentum going, while Iyer shifted gears to notch up his second consecutive fifty. The duo ensured there were no further hiccups, steering Punjab Kings to a resounding victory with ease and authority.

Chasing 172, Punjab Kings got off to a blazing start, courtesy of Prabhsimran Singh, who went on an all-out assault to put the game firmly in their control early on. While Priyansh Arya fell cheaply, the ever-reliable Shreyas Iyer stepped in and stitched together a commanding 84-run partnership with Prabhsimran. The latter was the aggressor, bringing up a well-deserved half-century, while Iyer played the perfect supporting role.

As clinical as a chase gets! Punjab Kings cruise to their second consecutive victory, showcasing a remarkable transformation this season with a squad packed with match-winners. This is nothing less than a statement win! Wrapping up the chase with eight wickets in hand and 22 balls to spare, Punjab Kings not only secured two crucial points but also gave their net run rate a solid boost. A superb all-round effort, and they are starting to look like serious contenders in this tournament!

16.26

SIX! Shreyas Iyer finishes the game off with a biggie and also gets to his FIFTY! Back-to-back half-centuries for the PBKS skipper. Looped up by Samad, full and on middle and leg, Iyer gets nice and low as he reaches out in front. Smokes it over deep mid-wicket for a six. Punjab Kings complete a resounding win and make it two wins from as many games!

16.10

Floats it up, short and on middle, Iyer backs away and mistimes the cut to cover.

Strategic Break! Not much to deliberate for either side at this stage, with Punjab Kings needing just a solitary run off the final four overs. It has been a commanding chase from them, completely outclassing LSG’s bowling attack. They have paced the innings to perfection, ensuring they reach the target with plenty of deliveries to spare which will significantly boost their net run rate. It’s only a matter of time now before they officially seal the deal and wrap up a dominant victory. Abdul Samad is handed the ball now.

Commentary

We are all set to get going. The two umpires and players have made their way out to the centre. It will be Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh to open the innings for the Kings. Shardul Thakur will open the attack for the Super Giants. Arya will face the first ball.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, given their shaky start, the Lucknow Super Giants would have gladly taken a total of 171. However, the strong finish they were aiming for didn’t quite materialize, and those final two overs could prove to be the difference in the game. The new ball offered movement both in the air and off the deck, something LSG will be keen to exploit. As Arshdeep Singh mentioned in his interview, the wicket eased out as the innings progressed, which will play into the Kings' hands. The chase is coming up shortly…

Arshdeep Singh is in for a chat. He says that his performance was average on a pitch that offered a lot, and he could have conceded fewer runs. Adds that the ball was stopping a bit in the Powerplay and there was extra bounce as well and had they hit the right length, the score could have been much less. Talks about the total and reckons they will have to bat well, but also mentions that the wicket seemed to have gotten better later on.

David Miller couldn't make much of an impact either, as PBKS kept striking at crucial moments, preventing LSG from building any sustained momentum. Ayush Badoni held one end up, and the innings got the much-needed boost with the arrival of Abdul Samad. At 156 with two overs to go, a total of 180 looked well within reach for the home side. However, Marco Jansen delivered a tight penultimate over, and Arshdeep Singh, having conceded 20 runs in his previous over, bounced back brilliantly to close out the innings.

A good closure to the innings for the Punjab Kings with only 15 runs coming off the last 2 overs. It was an eventful first innings, with momentum shifting back and forth as both teams landed their punches. Asked to bat first, LSG stumbled early, courtesy of Arshdeep Singh and Lockie Ferguson. Reduced to 35/3, Nicholas Pooran started cautiously but fell just as he looked to accelerate.

A couple of runs to end the innings. Lucknow Super Giants finish at 171/7. Full and outside off, Shardul Thakur slices it aerially, but the ball dips in front of the fielder at deep point. The batters decide to take the second and a wayward throw back to the keeper allows them to get through with ease.

19.50

Nails the yorker, at the stumps, Shardul Thakur digs it out.

19.52wd

TWO WIDES! Full and beyond the tramline outside off, Avesh Khan cannot reach for it and Shardul Thakur sets off for the run. The ball goes to the right of the keeper and the batters sneak a quick run. Punjab Kings opt to challenge the onfield call of a wide and the replay shows the ball was well beyond the guideline. Wide it is.

Avesh Khan is the new man in.

19.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! Punjab Kings are closing in tightly! Arshdeep Singh finally gets the better of Abdul Samad and his cameo of 27 (12) comes to an end. Full and way outside off, Abdul Samad steps out and has to reach for it. Goes at it with hard hands and only manages to get an outside edge that lobs straight to short third. Priyansh Arya takes a simple catch to see the back of Samad.

19.31

On a length, around off, Shardul Thakur works it to deep point for a single.

19.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Arshdeep Singh gets his second and a fine inning from Ayush Badoni comes to a close in the final over. Short of a length, outside off, Badoni moves across and pulls, but the ball skids through quicker to take the lower half of the bat. It goes high and to the left of deep mid-wicket. Glenn Maxwell moves across, covers a lot of ground and takes a solid catch low to his left. Shardul Thakur comes out to bat.

Can the Lucknow Super Giants get to 175?

19.21wd

WIDE! Short and outside off, Ayush Badoni moves across but lets it pass.

19.11

Sees the batter move across and bowls it wider, and full, Abdul Samad sweeps it to deep square leg for one.

FOUR! It's raining boundaries at the moment! Arshdeep Singh bowls the wide yorker and Abdul Samad threads it precisely through the gap between deep point and deep third for another boundary.

17.44

FOUR! What do we call that shot? Just outrageous stuff! Arshdeep Singh fires a full toss, way beyond the tramline outside off, Abdul Samad reaches for it and scoops it to the fine leg fence for a boundary.

17.36

SIX! Abdul Samad is putting on a show already! On a length, outside off, becomes a bit too predictable and Abdul Samad heaves it over long on for a big six.

17.21

17.14

FOUR! Great start to the over! Back of a length, just outside off, Ayush Badoni cuts it neatly and beats backward point to his left for a boundary.

Arshdeep Singh (2-0-16-1) returns to the attack. Yuzvendra Chahal is done for the night. He has been subbed out and Nehal Wadhera comes in as the Impact Player for the Punjab Kings. Wadhera will have a job to do later on with the bat.

OUT! CAUGHT! A moment of brilliance in the deep brings LSG a much-needed breakthrough! Prabhsimran Singh’s explosive knock comes to an end on 69 off just 34 balls, courtesy of an outstanding team effort from Ayush Badoni and Ravi Bishnoi. This is tossed up on middle, and Singh looks to muscle it over deep mid-wicket. He got plenty of height but not quite the distance. Badoni, stationed at the boundary, pulls off a stunning grab with both his hands while falling backward. As he is about to lose balance and step over the ropes, he has the presence of mind to flick the ball back in play, allowing Bishnoi to dive forward and complete the dismissal. A sensational effort from both fielders, and LSG finally find a way to break this dangerous stand.

Has that been taken cleanly? Ayush Badoni and Ravi Bishnoi combine in the deep to complete a catch, but has Ayush managed to release the ball before going over the fence? Yes, he has, as the replays confirm. OUT flashes on the big screen.

The momentum is firmly in their favor, and LSG desperately need a breakthrough to shift the tide. Prabhsimran Singh is in ominous touch, taking the attack to the bowlers, and dismissing him will be key for the hosts.

Pooran has started cautiously, but he is not one to stay quiet for long, and we could soon see him throw in a counterpunch. Meanwhile, the Kings will be quite pleased with the way the game has gone so far and will be looking to make further inroads. Yuzvendra Chahal will bowl after the break. An interesting battle is upon us - Chahal vs Pooran!

Punjab Kings (Playing XI) - Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Shreyas Iyer (C), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Marco Jansen, Yuzvendra Chahal, Lockie Ferguson (On PBKS debut) (In for Azmatullah Omarzai), Arshdeep Singh.

Impact players nominated by the Lucknow Super Giants - Prince Yadav, M Siddharth, Shahbaz Ahmed, Himmat Singh and Akash Singh.

Lucknow Super Giants (Unchanged Playing XI) - Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (C/WK), Ayush Badoni, David Miller, Abdul Samad, Shardul Thakur, Digvesh Singh, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi.

The skipper of the Lucknow Super Giants, Rishabh Pant, says that they wanted to chase but are fine with batting first. Believes that they need to play with freedom and the game will take care of itself. He says a lot of people come here to support them and he wants to give them a good match. He says there is no change to the team.

Shreyas Iyer, the skipper of Punjab Kings, says this is the first game at this ground and since the game is being played on a red soil wicket and potential dew on the horizon, they are happy to chase. Mentions that as a team, they have decided to give the players the freedom to play however they want to, but win games eventually. Adds that the previous game is history and they will have to adapt to the conditions quickly and play accordingly. Concludes that Lockie Ferguson comes into the side for them.

TOSS - Shreyas Iyer calls it correctly and the Punjab Kings have opted to BOWL first.

For the Punjab Kings, the Shreyas Iyer-captaincy era has started on a good note with a win in the first game. However, now it’s been a week since they played their first game, and they will have to start afresh. Their first game was a real positive, as they clicked on pretty much every area, putting in an impressive performance, especially with the bat. So, will the inspired LSG register a win in the first home game, or will the Kings add another away win to their kitty? We shall find out. Toss and team news coming up shortly...

The Lucknow Super Giants would be feeling confident coming into this game on the back of a win in their previous game. In terms of player availability, there is still no word on Mayank Yadav and Akash Deep's comeback date. However, Avesh Khan is now back in the thick of things, and he would be looking to get a good performance under his belt after a poor outing in the last game. Overall, it will be interesting to see the surface that will be dished out by the home team.

Hello, and a warm welcome to match number 13 of 2025 IPL. It’s the Lucknow Super Giants taking on the Punjab Kings at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. This will be the first home game for the Super Giants for the season, and they would be looking to start with a win. On the other hand, the Kings will be looking to go 2 in 2 after their close win over GT in the first game.

... MATCH DAY ...

The Indian Premier League 2025 is all set to arrive in Lucknow, as the home team, Lucknow Super Giants, will be taking on the Punjab Kings in their first home fixture of the season at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. Both teams are coming into this encounter with a win behind their back. Lucknow Super Giants started their campaign with a heartbreaking loss against Delhi Capitals, but they were quick to recover from that nightmare loss, as they crushed a high-flying Sunrisers Hyderabad side with a convincing win. Their bowling attack, especially their pace attack, has been marred with injuries, as they are still missing out on their 2 frontline pacers in Akash Deep and Mayank Yadav. In their first game, their bowling attack failed to defend 210 from a point where they had the Delhi Capitals reeling at 65/5. After that nightmarish game, their bowling attack, led by Shardul Thakur, made a rather heroic comeback in the 2nd game as they restricted the SRH batting powerhouse for an under-par total of 190. Thakur has clearly been the pick of the bowlers for them, and he has been ably supported by the express pace sensation Prince Yadav. Their lead spinner Ravi Bishnoi, is yet to join the party as he hasn’t had the greatest start to the season. Overall, their bowling department would breathe a sigh of relief at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, where wickets have been slow in nature. In the batting department, Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran have led from the front as both the batters have got fifties in as many games. The latter, in particular has been at his destructive best as he has got two 70+ scores at a strike rate in excess of 250. So overall, their batting seems to be in good shape and they would hope for their captain Rishabh Pant to join the party soon. On the other hand, Punjab Kings had a winning start to this season, as they emerged victorious in a rather close contest defending a towering 243-run total against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. The raging debate around who would open with Prabhsimran Singh has been put to rest for now, as Priyansh Arya set the stage ablaze in the campaign opener. However, the biggest positive from their 1st game was their newly appointed skipper, Shreyas Iyer, who smashed the GT bowlers all over the park as he scored a solid 97(42). Shashank Singh, one of their retained uncapped picks, continued from where he left off last season as he played a blistering cameo. Their bowling department is led by the start Indian left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who started the campaign on a good note as he picked up two wickets in the high-scoring contest at Ahmedabad. Yuzvendra Chahal their premium leggie, had a poor first outing as he got plummeted around. However, in the bowling department, the biggest positive from their 1st game was Vyshak Vijaykumar, who came in as an impact sub and had an instant impact as he changed the momentum of the game, putting on a wide yorker masterclass. Now coming to this contest, on paper, PBKS clearly appear to be the better side with a good balance in their 11 with a mixture of youth and experience in the squad. On the other hand, LSG do have a strong batting lineup, but their bowling attack is still young and a bit raw. So, will the Shreyas-led PBKS go 2 in 2, or will the injury-marred LSG side find some home inspiration and knock over the Punjab Kings? We shall find out.
