Commentary

Right then, a second win of the season for the Super Giants and, importantly, their first at home. They now hit the road and travel to Kolkata to take on the Knight Riders in an afternoon clash on Tuesday, 8th April. As for Mumbai, they find themselves with just one win from four outings and will return to Wankhede to host the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Monday, 7th April. 5th April will be a doubleheader Saturday in the 2025 Indian Premier League. The first game of the day will see the Chennai Super Kings taking on the Delhi Capitals in Chennai at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT). This will be followed by the Punjab Kings squaring off against the Rajasthan Royals in Mullanpur at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). As always, our build-up for both games will begin a lot sooner. See you then. Cheers!

Digvesh Singh is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his miserly bowling performance. He returned impressive figures of 1 for 21 from his 4 overs. Rishabh Pant is there to translate the interview into English. Digvesh says he is really enjoying the way he is performing. Adds that he loves to attack the batter and that really helps him to grow as a bowler. Mentions that he takes a lot of inspiration from Sunil Narine and tries to make an impact like he does. Adds that he wants to stay calm in high-pressure conditions and wants to be that guy who puts his hand up to do the job for the team. On Naman Dhir’s wicket, he reflects that he talked to Pant before that over. Says he wanted mid-wicket, but Pant advised him not to have one. And mentions that’s why he bowled into the stumps as he knew Dhir would play an attacking shot, and got out.

The captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, Rishabh Pant, says the wicket played well, and it was important for the team to assess conditions quickly. Highlights the impact of Mitchell Marsh at the top and his start allowed the middle order to capitalise. Adds that the team wants to continue playing according to the situation, regardless of the conditions. Speaking about the second innings, he admits it was mentally challenging as Mumbai kept wickets in hand and maintained momentum. He expresses satisfaction that the bowlers held their nerves and executed their plans to close out the game. Praises Shardul Thakur and hopes the pacer continues his good form. Also lauds Digvesh Singh for the way he has consistently held his nerve under pressure in crunch moments.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Shardul Thakur is in next for a chat. He says there’s always pressure when you are bowling the penultimate or last over. He says Avesh bowled a wonderful over. Adds that this is their job and as professionals, he feels this is what is expected. He feels this was a tricky wicket and it seemed on the slower side, but in the end, he felt it came down to bowling perfect yorkers. Mentions that they do observe the wicket in the first half, and many times they see the wicket getting better with dew taking effect, and hence it’s important to have different deliveries under their belt. He says Digvesh Singh is a superb bowler and a wonderful character as well and he is someone who expresses himself well. He says Digvesh did well in the practice games, and hence, he was drafted into the playing XI. Shardul feels that red soil wickets play well in the sense that batters can trust the bounce, but he feels that with black soil wickets, you need more skills as a batter to score boundaries.

The captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, reflects on the defeat. He begins by saying it’s disappointing to lose. Thinks they gave too many runs on this wicket. On being asked about his bowling, he expresses that he is enjoying his bowling. Admits that he does not have many options and he tries to read the wicket well and take smarter options. Adds that he has always been aggressive in his mindset. Says the focus is to bowl more dot balls and compel the batters to make mistakes. Says they win as a team and lose as a team and does not want to blame any individual. Also says he and the batting unit take ownership. On his thoughts about retiring Tilak Varma out, he says they wanted some big hits, and Tilak, unfortunately, wasn’t getting those. Also says in cricket, one of those days come and it is normal. Further adds that they want to play good cricket and take good calls. Says that they want to play smart with the ball with a bit of aggression and admits they aren’t doing that now. Ends by saying it is a long tournament, and a couple of wins will give them their rhythm back.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Mitchell Marsh gave Lucknow Super Giants a blazing start. However, Mumbai Indians hit back in the middle phase, with Hardik Pandya leading the charge through his smart use of slower deliveries. Aiden Markram and Ayush Badoni steadied the innings before a quickfire cameo from David Miller helped LSG reach 203. Hardik was superb with the ball for MI with his maiden five-wicket haul in T20s.

SKY's dismissal came at an inopportune time for Mumbai, leaving them needing 29 runs off the final 12 balls. With Tilak Varma struggling at the other end and eventually retiring out, the onus fell entirely on Hardik Pandya. From Lucknow’s perspective, first Shardul Thakur and then Avesh Khan executed their deliveries to perfection in the death overs to seal the deal.

Lucknow Super Giants were inconsistent with the ball after those early breakthroughs, allowing Mumbai to rebuild and keep the chase on track. Digvesh Singh provided a crucial breakthrough right after the first strategic break, and from there, the home side tightened the grip, with Digvesh playing a key role in applying the squeeze. Suryakumar Yadav kept the required run rate in check but found it difficult to score fluently on the sluggish surface.

Lucknow Super Giants return to winning ways in a thriller! With this victory, they continue their dominance over the five-time champions, securing their sixth win in seven encounters. It's the third defeat in as many away games for Mumbai Indians, who had their moments in the game, but LSG’s brilliance at the death with the ball proved too much to handle. With 204 runs to chase, Mumbai lost both openers within the first three overs.

LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS WIN BY 12 RUNS! They register their second victory this season. Fuller one, across off from Avesh, Mitchell Santner gets a bit across and tries to drive to the leg side, but only manages to hit it to the mid-wicket fielder. Another defeat for Mumbai Indians at Lucknow, and their wait to defeat LSG at their backyard extends for the time being!

19.51

Just a single. What an over this has been from Avesh, despite conceding a six in the first delivery! A low full toss again, around off, Hardik Pandya mistimes it, lofts it off the toe-end over the bowler for a single.

19.40

And LSG can sniff a win now! Full and around off, Hardik Pandya swings for the hills, but only inside edges it onto the front pad.

19.30

Full and on the legs, Hardik heaves across to deep square leg and denies to run a single.

19.22

Good comeback by Avesh! Spears it in, too full on middle and leg, Hardik Pandya clears his front leg and works across to deep mid-wicket. David Miller from deep square leg runs to his left and mops it up. The batters charge back for a couple of quick runs.

19.16

SIX! Pressure? What's that? Says Hardik! A low full toss from Avesh, outside off, Hardik Pandya crouches a bit, gets his bat properly under the ball and lofts it over extra cover for a cracking six. 16 off 5 now.

Avesh Khan (3-0-31-1) to bowl the final over with Mumbai Indians needing 22 runs off the last 6 balls. Lucknow Super Giants have been penalised for a slow over-rate. They will be allowed only 4 fielders outside the 30-yard circle for the final over.

18.62

Short and around off, Mitchell Santner stands tall and pulls between long on and deep mid-wicket. Runs the first one hard, and hares back for the second to keep Hardik on strike. 22 needed off the last 6 balls now.

So far so good from Shardul Thakur!

Now then, a tactical move from Mumbai Indians to call Tilak Varma back. He was struggling to get the big shots away. Mitchell Santner walks in place of Tilak.

18.51

Fifth single! What an over so far from Shardul! A low full toss, outside off at 132.4 kph, Hardik Pandya expands his arms and slices through cover-point for just one.

18.41

A low full toss, on off, Tilak Varma drills it along the ground to long on. Another single. These won't bother LSG at this moment!

Change of bat for Hardik Pandya.

18.31

Slips out a full toss, outside off, Hardik throws everything at it and slices it over the backward point fielder for just a single. 26 off 9 now! This has been a good, good over from Shardul!

18.21

What a stop from the substitute fielder, Shahbaz Ahmed! Full again from Shardul, around off, Tilak smashes it to pierce the extra cover and mid off gap, but Shahbaz is swift to move and dive to his left at extra cover. Half stops the ball and parries it to mid off. Only a single.

18.11

Starts off well, does Shardul! Full and outside off, Hardik Pandya carves it away, for only a single at deep cover.

Who will bowl the penultimate over? Shardul Thakur or Avesh Khan? Rishabh Pant is going with the former with MI needing 29 runs off 12 balls. Thakur has been expensive on the night, going for 33 runs in his 3 overs so far.

Full and flat, around off, driven along the ground for a single at deep cover. An excellent outing with the ball for Digvesh Singh. He wraps his spell with 4-0-21-1. MI need 29 off 12 balls now. Tensions across both camps!

17.54

FOUR! Helped away! Important boundary for MI this! Slides down the leg stump again, full in length, Hardik Pandya sweeps it very fine towards deep fine leg for a boundary.

17.42

On the leg side again, fuller in length, Hardik gets down on a knee and sweeps to the right of deep backward square for a couple more.

Commentary

Welcome back for MI's response with the bat. The two umpires walk out to the middle and the LSG players spread out to take their fielding positions. A fresh opening pair of Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton walks out for the Mumbai Indians. Ravi Bishnoi is swapped in as the Impact Sub for LSG as he repalces Mitchell Marsh. Shardul Thakur to open the attack for the home team. Off we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Well then, 204 is the magic number for the Mumbai Indians to win their second game this season, and to register their first ever win at Lucknow. With the dew expected to arrive as the evening progresses, bowling will get a bit tricky. It is all about how the Mumbai Indians start in the first six overs. With no Rohit Sharma tonight, there will be a bit more pressure on the batting unit. Whereas, LSG are not unknown to their challenges. With a relatively inexperienced bowling unit, how will their bowlers fare against an in-form MI batting unit. Stay tuned for the chase.

David Miller is in for a chat. Mentions that the feedback from those who spent time in the middle suggested the pitch was a bit slow and the ball tended to stick. While he feels it’s a decent surface, he says that variations will be key for the bowlers. Speaking about the conditions, he says there’s no dew at the moment but hopes the bowlers can execute the plans discussed over the past few days. On Hardik Pandya, he states that he’s a quality bowler whose bouncer comes on quicker than expected and praises his ability to hold the length well. He hopes his own bowlers can replicate that control. When asked about reaching the milestone of 3000 IPL runs, he admits he wasn’t aware of it and calls it a great privilege to have played in the IPL for so long. He adds that when someone plays for an extended period, the milestones are bound to come.

With just four overs left in the innings and the run rate hovering around the 10-mark, the South African duo of Markram and Miller continued to stay aggressive in their approach. Markram reached a well-constructed fifty, showcasing his class throughout the rebuilding phase, but perished at the most crucial juncture. But with Miller’s late fireworks, LSG crossed the 200-run mark, as they managed to score 57 runs in the last five overs. Hardik Pandya finished off with his best IPL figures, taking a 5-fer, and came up trumps with the ball.

Markram continued to hold steady from one end, finding the boundary when needed. He found an able ally in Ayush Badoni as they formed a solid recovery partnership. The run rate that had plummeted around the halfway mark soared back to 10 runs per over as the duo shifted gears. Just when the freefall looked to be transforming into an upward trajectory, Badoni’s fall against Ashwani Kumar brought another slowdown, but only for a brief period.

The pitch looked tailor-made for batting, and with MI's new-ball attack failing to make inroads, Vignesh Puthur stepped up to deliver the crucial breakthrough they desperately needed. As often happens, one wicket triggered another, with Nicholas Pooran's aggressive approach backfiring quickly. What had been a rocket-fueled start for LSG suddenly nosedived as two more quick wickets fell, including the valuable scalp of Pant.

After struggling with opening partnerships earlier in the season, LSG's top order finally dominated the Powerplay. Mitchell Marsh came out swinging and hammered runs at will, while Aiden Markram played the supporting role perfectly from the other end. Marsh blazed his way to a fifty within the Powerplay, pushing LSG to an impressive 69/0 in six overs, with Marsh alone contributing 60 of those runs.

Lucknow Super Giants manage to get past the 200-run mark, as they scored at the rate of 11.40 runs per over in the last five. To be fair, this is a very good total on this kind of a wicket. Mumbai Indians did keep chipping in with wickets at regular intervals, but LSG found rescuers who kept scoring quick runs.

A couple of runs to end the innings! On a nagging length, on off, Avesh hits it more of the upper half of the bat to the right of long off and comes charging back for the second run. 15 runs off the final over and LSG finish with 203!

Can Hardik get another wicket here?

19.61wd

Wide given but Hardik Pandya has challenged the decision! Hardik bowls it short, outside off, Avesh moves across his stumps and has a swing at it but misses. The replays show that the ball was beyond the revised wide guideline and the on-field call of wide is upheld.

Avesh Khan walks out to bat now and will face the final delivery of the first innings.

19.5W

OUT! TAKEN! MAIDEN FIVE-WICKET HAUL IN T20s FOR HARDIK! Pandya bends his back and digs it in short, outside off. The width is there for Deep to cash in and he throws his hands at the delivery. Slices it towards deep backward point where Mitchell Santner runs across to his right and takes a well-judged catch. Hat-trick ball coming up.

Akash Deep is the new batter in.

19.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! David Miller holes out with 2 balls left in the innings! A quickfire cameo of 27 runs from 14 balls from David. Pace on and on a short of a good length, on middle, Miller hangs back for the pull but gets it height on the bat. Gets the height but not the distance. Naman Dhir takes an easy catch in the deep. Second catch for Dhir this evening. LSG are 200/7.

19.34

FOUR! Helped away! Hardik goes into the wicket and it is the pace-off delivery, around leg, Miller gets inside the line and helps it away to the left of deep fine leg for a boundary. 200 comes up for the Lucknow Super Giants!

19.26

SIX! Nicely struck! Pandya goes searching for the yorker but ends up serving a low full toss, on middle, Miller takes it on the full and gets enough height on it to clear Raj Angad Bawa at long on for a six.

19.12

In the air...but it drops well short! On a short of a good length, on middle, David Miller shapes up to heave it away on the leg side. Skies it straight up but it falls in the vacant mid-wicket region, well in front of the rushing Naman Dhir. A couple of runs taken and this brings up 3000 runs for Miller in IPL.

Hardik Pandya (3-0-21-3) to wrap the first innings.

18.51

Nails the yorker, on middle, Miller jams it out back past the bowler for one more.

18.41

Gets it very full, on middle, Thakur digs it out to backward square leg for one.

Shardul Thakur walks out to bat at number 8.

18.3W

OUT! TAKEN! First wicket of the night for Boult! Two wickets in five balls for MI. Trent takes all the pace off and goes into the wicket, around off, Samad is made to generate power on the pull but does not succeed in doing so. Hits it only as far as deep mid-wicket where Naman Dhir comes in off the ropes and takes a safe catch around his waist.

18.21

Full and straight, at the stumps, Miller knocks it to long on for a single.

18.14

FOUR! Just over! Off-cutter from Boult and keeps it away from the batter, on a good length, Miller throws his hands at the delivery and gets a thickish outside edge. The ball flies over the leaping Vignesh Puthur at short third for a boundary.

So far so good from Shardul Thakur!

Now then, a tactical move from Mumbai Indians to call Tilak Varma back. He was struggling to get the big shots away. Mitchell Santner walks in place of Tilak.

Suryakumar Yadav, with a huge stride, shuffles across off and tries to execute his signature lofted lap shot to the leg side. He tries to drag the ball again from outside off. Goes through the shot in the air, but in the bigger side of the ground. It sails but only goes as far as deep backward square leg. STRATEGIC BREAK. It is pretty neck-to-neck at the moment, with both teams' worms overlapping each other. Suryakumar Yadav has been at his usual self, motoring along at a good pace and inching closer to his fifty, while Tilak Varma has provided that cool and composed hand from the other end. Both have played percentage cricket, and have managed to control the innings well so far. A wicket or two here will bring LSG on top of their opponents. But who will break this stand? OUT! KNOCKED HIM OVER! How often have we seen a wicket falling right after the break in play? Digvesh dishes out on a flatter trajectory, on a good length, keeping it closer to the off stump. It lands and goes straight on. Naman Dhir gets a bit across and tries to nudge into the leg side, but plays over the wrong line. Enough gap between the bat and pad for the ball to sneak through and crash into the off pole. Digvesh Singh breaks this 69-run partnership for the third wicket and brings out the famous notebook celebration once again. Naman Dhir departs on 46 off just 24. Almost dragged it on first ball! Shaping away a touch, on a back of a length, on off, Jacks jabs at the delivery. Gets an inside edge that sneaks past the stumps and rolls to the left of short fine leg. Avesh Khan slides there, but the ball gets past him, allowing one more run.

OUT! CAUGHT! No boundary off the first four balls and something had to give! A fine catch from Raj Angad Bawa. Pandya serves the off-cutter, shorter and wider on off, Aiden Markram reaches out and slaps it with a horizontal bat. Neither does he get the elevation nor get it wide enough to beat the long off fielder. Hits it flat and low towards long off where Bawa runs across to his left and slides to grab it.

Pushed even wider by Kumar, on a good length, Ayush reaches out and tries to use the pace of the ball and scoop it behind square on the leg side. The ball comes on slower than he expected it to and takes the outside edge. The keeper, Ryan Rickelton, completes the catch with a leap. Badoni goes for 30 off 19 balls.

14.50

On top of middle, on a good length, Aiden Markram stays leg side of the ball and eases it to the point region.

14.43

Excellent work from Raj Angad Bawa in the deep. Saves a certain boundary! A slower one, into the pitch, on the stumps. Badoni pulls it behind square into the leg side. Raj from deep square leg runs to his right and stops it with a full-stretched slide just ahead of the circumference of the ropes. Saves a run as the batters rush for the third run.

Slower one, outside off, Badoni leans back and cuts it past point for a single. Trent Boult mops it up and throws to the keeper, where Ryan Rickelton shows a bit of casualness to collect the ball to his left and the ball rolls to the leg side, towards the square leg region. 13.34

13.24

FOUR! Swept away neatly! A little counterattack from Badoni and LSG here! Flat and on off, full in length, Ayush Badoni sweeps it all along the ground through deep square leg for another boundary.

13.14

FOUR! Excellent use of the feet from Badoni! Dropped fuller and around off, Ayush Badoni comes charging down the pitch of the ball and lofts inside out over cover for a boundary.

STRATEGIC BREAK! Mumbai Indians have fought back well after being put under the pump in the Powerplay by Mitchell Marsh. From being 69/0 at the end of the Powerplay, the next 7 overs have yielded 3 wickets for MI and have conceded 59 runs to pull things back. Hardik Pandya has led the charge with his clever use of slower deliveries, and the rest of the bowlers have followed suit. The slower you bowl, the tougher it gets for the batters to find the boundary on this surface. It’s not the easiest pitch to start on, which is why Aiden Markram’s role becomes pivotal for the Super Giants. With 7 overs left in the innings, it will be interesting to see when the home side decides to press the accelerator.

11.30

A huge appeal for LBW, but the umpire denies. MI go upstairs and challenge the on-field decision. Santner stays around the stumps and floats it up, a bit slower through the air, and fuller, on the middle stump line, with a bit of bounce on it as well. Ayush Badoni sits down to sweep it away, but misses and wears on the front pad. Ball Tracking comes up and shows that the ball is clipping the top of the middle stump, on the umpire’s call. Not Out!

A confident shout for LBW, but the finger does not go up! Looked quite straight to the naked eye. The stride taken by Ayush Badoni saved him there. The Ball Tracking shows that the impact is the umpire's call for it being over 2.5 metres, and the ball is clipping the stumps, and it is the umpire's call on that front as well.

11.21

Tossed up fuller and on middle, flicked away to deep mid-wicket for a single.

Only manages to get a leading edge that lobs towards the mid off region. It dips low ahead of Corbin Bosch who runs and gets low, and manages to snaffle a fine sliding catch. Another low score for Rishabh Pant.

2.44

FOUR! Didn't quite time it well, but still, gets it to the fence! Full and on off, shaping a bit in. Mitchell Marsh gets on the front foot and tries to access the cover region, but connects off the inside half of the bat, and hits it to the left of the bowler, wide of the outstretched left hand of Boult, for a boundary.

Length, on the stumps, worked across into the leg side.

2.26

SIX! What a cracking shot! Full and on off, Mitchell Marsh pats his front foot out and lofts it with a straight bat face, clears long off with ease for a six. Looked so effortless.

2.10

An appeal for LBW from Boult, but not entertained by the umpire. MI do not opt for a review. Back of a length, angling in, on off, Mitchell Marsh stands weighing on the back foot and tries to pull, but plays over it and wears high on the thigh pad. The ball deflects and goes towards short third.

Misses out on this one, does Marsh! Full again, outside off, Mitchell Marsh tries to play the cover drive again, but gets off the inner half of the bat. The ball rolls to the left of mid on as they cross for a quick single. An expensive over from Chahar. 15 off it.

1.54

FOUR! Driven crisply! Fairly outside off, width offered on a fuller length, Mitchell Marsh leans on the ball and caresses it through cover for a cracking boundary.

1.44

FOUR! Mind your lengths, says Marsh! Short and outside off, Mitchell Marsh stands tall and drags the ball from outside off, and nails the pull shot. Plays it over mid-wicket for a one-bounce boundary.

Well, well, well! Remember that fourth ball of the first over when Marsh was beaten on the inside edge trying to drive? The UltraEdge is in now and guess what? There's a clear spike just as the ball passes the bat. Not a single appeal from the MI camp, and that’s a big opportunity missed early in the innings.

1.41wd

WIDE! Sprayed down the leg stump line, on a length, Mitchell Marsh misses to whip it across, and Wide is called.

We are all set to get going in the City of Nawabs. Hardik Pandya and his men sprint onto the middle, followed by the two openers of the Lucknow Super Giants. It will be Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram to open the innings for the Super Giants. Trent Boult has the new ball in hand. A Trans-Tasman battle first up with Boult raring to go against Marsh. A slip in place. Here we go!

Mitchell Marsh of the Lucknow Super Giants is up for a flash interview. He says it’s disappointing to lose the opener at home with so much crowd in. And he says they are looking to bounce back. He says they are a relatively new team and he says they know MI are 5-time champion team, so they respect that fact. He adds that one of the good things about IPL is the friendships that players make over a period of the 2 months. He jokingly says he is not looking forward to bowling.

Impact players nominated by Mumbai Indians - Tilak Varma, Corbin Bosch, Robin Minz, Satyanarayana Raju and Karn Sharma.

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI) - Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton (WK), Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (C), Raj Angad Bawa (In for Rohit Sharma), Mitchell Santner, Trent Boult, Ashwani Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Vignesh Puthur.

Impact players nominated by Lucknow Super Giants - Ravi Bishnoi, Prince Yadav, Shahbaz Ahmed, M Siddharth and Akash Singh.

Lucknow Super Giants (Playing XI) - Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (C/WK), Ayush Badoni, David Miller, Abdul Samad, Shardul Thakur, Digvesh Singh, Akash Deep (In for M Siddharth), Avesh Khan.

The captain of Lucknow Super Giants, Rishabh Pant says as a batting unit, they are very confident. Admits few of their players, including him, haven’t come off. Says the discussion is about going out and expressing themselves and just playing according to the situation. Says the way he has set himself up, he is quite confident. Admits they haven’t capitalised yet, but is hopeful they will do it soon. Informs one change. Akash Deep comes in for M Siddharth.

The captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, mentions that it looks like a fresh wicket but admits they are not entirely sure how it will play. He adds that dew might come into play later in the evening, which could have an impact on the conditions. States that the group has consciously decided not to talk too much about the surface and to focus on how they want to approach the game and play good cricket regardless of the pitch. Says that adaptability and executing the right plans will be crucial and stresses that cricket is a situation-based sport and that success comes from responding well to different moments in the game. Informs that Rohit Sharma is unavailable for this game after taking a hit on the knee in the nets. Also gives an update on Jasprit Bumrah that he should be available soon.

TOSS UPDATE - The flip of the coin lands in favor of Mumbai Indians and Hardik Pandya elects to BOWL first.

Featuring in his 100th match for the Mumbai Indians alone, Suryakumar Yadav receives a special jersey from MI's batting coach, Kieron Pollard. All other teammates surround in a huddle and appreciate SKY as he accepts the special jersey.

PITCH REPORT - Daren Ganga is pitchside. He begins by pointing out that while the previous game here was played on a red-soil surface, tonight’s match will be held on a black-soil wicket. Shares that the square boundaries measure 66 metres on one side and 73 metres on the other, with a straight hit of 78 metres. Mentions that the pitch appears dark in colour, with a light grass covering and a few barren patches. Ganga notes that in the last game, seam movement was minimal, but the bounce was consistent and conducive for batting. However, for tonight, he expects the bounce to be slightly lower, which could bring spinners into the game with a bit more turn on offer. Since the start of 2024, the average first-innings score at this venue has been 181, and Ganga believes that’s the benchmark total teams will be aiming for this evening.

The head-to-head statistics heavily favor the home side, with LSG enjoying a perfect 2-0 record against MI at this venue and an impressive overall tally of five victories from six encounters. As the teams prepare to face off, will Mumbai Indians break their jinx against Lucknow and secure consecutive wins, or will the Super Giants maintain their commanding dominance on home soil? Toss and team updates up next shortly. Stay tuned.

In a welcome development, pace bowler Akash Deep has been declared fit and ready to make his season debut. His addition strengthens LSG's pace department, forming a formidable trio alongside Shardul Thakur and Avesh Khan. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians, on the flip side, might consider an additional spinner to suit Lucknow's tricky conditions. Mumbai’s pace attack thrives on bounce and pace, but Ekana’s slow, grippy black-soil wicket is a different beast, unlike Wankhede. With 13 away losses in their last 18 games since 2023, MI’s batters and bowlers face a real test of adaptability.

The Mumbai Indians, often slow out of the blocks in IPL campaigns, are gradually hitting their stride. Their opening partnership remains a concern, with Rohit Sharma collecting just 21 runs this season, though Ryan Rickelton has rediscovered his touch. With others contributing decently with the bat, Rohit’s return to form will be the biggest thing to watch out for. From the hinterlands of Punjab, MI has unearthed another talent in Ashwani Kumar, whose impressive 4-wicket haul on debut speaks volumes of MI's talent-spotting prowess.

Donning new colours, Rishabh Pant is still navigating his role as LSG's captain while searching for his batting form. Nicholas Pooran has been their standout performer, currently wearing the Orange Cap, with solid support from Mitchell Marsh. Young Ayush Badoni showed promising glimpses in their last outing, but the team needs bigger contributions from established stars like David Miller and Aiden Markram. Their bowling arsenal faces challenges with key pacers sidelined and Ravi Bishnoi struggling to find his rhythm, though Digvesh Singh's leg-spin has been a silver lining.

Mumbai Indians have just begun finding their rhythm after a commanding victory against KKR at Wankhede, finally marking their presence on the points table with a substantial boost to their net run rate. Across the field, the Lucknow Super Giants are nursing wounds from a humbling defeat to the Punjab Kings on their home turf, leaving them in seventh place with two losses sandwiching their lone victory.

Hello, everyone! Feeling like a long week already? Worry not. We have a blockbuster Friday evening filled with entertainment for you all. As the Indian Premier League 2025 progresses into its 16th match, the Lucknow Super Giants host the Mumbai Indians in what promises to be a belter of a game at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium. The contest brings together two teams on different trajectories in their campaign.

... MATCH DAY ...

The Indian Premier League isn’t called the most competitive T20 league for nothing! After just two rounds of matches, every team has picked up at least one win, proving how unpredictable this tournament can be. Mumbai Indians were the only team without points, but they stormed back in style, dismantling defending champions KKR in their last game. Now, with renewed confidence, they head to the Ekana Stadium to take on the Lucknow Super Giants. MI’s victory was nothing short of dominant, with debutant Ashwani Kumar stealing the show with a sensational four-wicket haul. Their pace attack, led by the experienced duo of Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, provides both early breakthroughs and control at the death. Mitchell Santner has been a rock in the spin department, and if MI wants more variety, young Vignesh Puthur - who impressed in the first game could be an option. With the bat, SKY and Tilak Varma have been MI’s most reliable performers, while Ryan Rickelton’s brilliant fifty in the last game will give him a massive confidence boost. However, the biggest talking point remains Rohit Sharma’s form. The MI legend hasn’t fired yet, but history tells us that when he does, he’s unstoppable. Skipper Hardik Pandya’s all-round brilliance is another massive plus - his impact with both bat and ball is something few teams can match. With Naman Dhir and Will Jacks adding further depth, MI looks dangerous despite Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. Now that they’ve tasted victory, they’ll be tough to stop! On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants are coming off a disappointing defeat, where their batting faltered under pressure. They have been heavily reliant on Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran, with the latter in sublime form and also the leading run-scorer with 189 runs in 3 games. Pooran has the ability to take the game away single-handedly, but LSG will need more from their other batters. Rishabh Pant is still searching for his rhythm and will be eager to make his mark as the new captain. David Miller, too, has struggled, but if he and Pant fire together, bowlers will have nightmares. Aiden Markram has shown glimpses of his class but needs to step up, while the performances of Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad under pressure in the last game were a positive sign. In the bowling department, LSG has been hit by injuries, but the return of Shardul Thakur who went unsold in the auction has been nothing short of a fairytale, as he now leads the pace attack. Akash Deep’s return adds further quality, while Prince Yadav’s mastery in the death overs has been impressive along with Avesh Khan's support. Ravi Bishnoi has struggled, but Digvesh Singh’s sharp leg spin and googlies has provided balance. History favors LSG, with five wins in six matches against MI. But with MI back in form, this clash promises to be a thriller. Which side are you backing?
