Commentary

Right then, the first game of a double-header Saturday in the IPL is done and dusted and it is Delhi Capitals who remain unbeaten and at the top of the points table. The only other unbeaten side, Punjab Kings, are up next in action and they have opted to bowl first against a resurgent Rajasthan Royals side. You can simply switch tabs and catch our coverage of that game. Cheers!

KL Rahul is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his fine knock in the first innings. Rahul starts by saying that it is how it is and he is used to batting at any spot. Adds that before the tournament began, he was setting up to open the innings but was told to fill in the number 4 slot and is happy to be back at the top of the order. Adds that it is more mental and getting used to walking in at a particular stage and once the body gets used to that, you get unsettled if you are shifted in the batting order and he's trying to go from ball one rather than not taking 2-3 balls. Reckons that he started off well and through the middle, it got a bit scratchy and a couple of good partnerships and those quickfire cameos set things up nicely, which allowed him to take some time as well and go deep.

Axar Patel, the Delhi Capitals skipper, says that he didn’t think it was going to be easy to go three in three but is happy with the performance of the side. Adds that they have discussed in the team meeting that having an impact on the game is important for them. Mentions that the strike rate is good for most of the batters and the execution is going well for them. Shares that he has a bit of an injury in his finger so he didn’t bowl much today. Says that their win is good, but they need to improve on areas and get better. Ends by sharing that they don’t want to get laid back and need to keep going as it’s a long tournament.

The Presentation ceremony...

Mitchell Starc is now down for a chat. He says that it's their first away game and it was a good performance overall with the batters adjusting to the conditions well and getting a par score and applauds the bowling unit as well. Mentions that the key to all cricket is that there are multiple contributions, and that's what they managed to do. Chuckles that it is as hot as in Vizag but the pace of the pitch is a bit different and this one took some turn as well. On his yorker, he says that people know it's coming but he still has to execute it and you can't afford to have an ego as a bowler in T20 cricket and need to adjust and try and stay a bit ahead of the batters.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Chennai Super Kings skipper, is down for a chat. He says that it has not gone their way since the last three games. Adds that they are trying their best but it’s not working for them. Shares that the Powerplay is a major concern in both departments, as things are not happening at the moment. Mentions that they are being more tentative and concerned, focusing on not losing wickets while batting, which is putting them behind. Tells that they need everyone to come together and click as a unit. Says that since powerplay, they were playing a catch-up game and were playing a batter short. Ends by adding that the plan was to take the game deep, but credits DC, who bowled well and did not allow them to get back in the game.

Earlier in the game, Axar Patel had no hesitation opting to bat first as it was a day game and the surface was likely to get slower. CSK, though, got the perfect start as Khaleel Ahmed sent JFM packing, but then came the counter-attack from Abishek Porel and KL Rahul, who put on a 54-run stand. The middle overs proved to be neck-and-neck as Rahul notched up a fine Fifty. However, Matheesha Pathirana bowled a stellar spell at the death to pull things back and DC had to settle for 183 on the board.

CSK began the 2025 campaign brightly with a win against their arch-rivals but have now lost three in a row, which is a big worry, as two teams that hadn't won in Chennai for more than half a decade have come here and done the job. The batting had been a worry before this game and it was a similar story yet again. The top 3 were undone inside the Powerplay with the middle order unable to do much damage either. The only one who got runs was Vijay Shankar and he even got multiple lives, but he finished unbeaten on 69 along with MS Dhoni, who scored 30 but off 26 deliveries.

The foundation of the win was laid up top by Mukesh Kumar, who got rid of Rachin Ravindra in the 2nd over. Mitchell Starc then followed it up with a wicket of his own and should have had two in the same over as well. Vipraj Nigam, entrusted to bowl the final Powerplay over, got the wicket of Conway and then even saw the back of the Impact sub, Shivam Dube, which really was the wicket that got DC the firm grip on the chase. After that, Kuldeep Yadav weaved his magic as the others chipped in and DC were able to breach the Chepauk fortress after 15 long years.

DELHI CAPITALS HAVE DONE IT! Yet another clinical showing and the Capitals keep their spotless record intact with 3 wins out of 3. It was a stellar showing with the ball as they suffocated the CSK batters, leaving the home side still without a successful run chase of over 180 runs since the 2019 IPL season.

Commentary

We are back for the crucial run chase! The DC players can be seen forming a huddle near the boundary ropes, as the umpires make their way out to the middle. It will be the two Kiwi left-handers, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra to open the innings for CSK. DC use their Impact sub to bring in Mukesh Kumar for Ashutosh Sharma. Mitchell Starc has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

... The Run Chase ...

Right then, CSK needs 184 to get their second win of the season and avoid a hat-trick of losses. They will need to bat much better than their previous games and remember, since 2019, CSK haven't managed to chase down any total upwards of 180 runs. Can they do it or will DC make it three out of three? We shall find out soon. Join us in a while for the second essay.

CSK started well with the ball by taking the early wicket but leaked runs in the powerplay. They did manage to get wickets at regular intervals but the scoring rate never dipped for the Capitals. The home side, however, came back strongly in the last five overs and kept DC from crossing the 200 mark. Khaleel Ahmed was impressive with the ball again taking two wickets while Ashwin and Matheesha Pathirana also did a tidy job. Mukesh Choudary and Noor Ahmad had off days as they were taken for 86 from their combined seven overs.

Delhi Capitals have managed just 43 runs in the last five overs and finished with a sub-par score of 183/6 from their 20 overs. They were in a good position to get over 200 but some tight bowling from CSK did not let that happen. Opting to bat first, DC lost Jake Fraser-McGurk early but  Abishek Porel and KL Rahul added a quick fifty-run stand to steady the innings. Porel departed for a well-made 33 while Axar Patel and Sameer Rizvi stitched handy stands through the middle with Rahul. The star of the innings was KL Rahul who made a sublime 77 off 51 balls and carried the innings on his shoulders. Tristan Stubbs, at the backend, stuck a quickfire 24 to take the Capitals over the 180-run mark.

Vipraj Nigam walks out to bat now.

OUT! RUN OUT! Ravindra Jadeja with a brilliant arm, gets another wicket for Chennai Super Kings. Matheesha Pathirana hits the length on the stumps. Ashutosh Sharma flicks the ball to the throwing arm of Ravindra Jadeja at deep square leg and calls for two straight away. Jadeja fires in a throw at the striker's end where Dhoni collects it and whips the bails in a flash. Ashutosh dives full-length but is well short of the crease. The Umpires send it upstairs and the decision is OUT.

Ashutosh Sharma walks out to bat now.

19.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! KL Rahul walks back in the final over! The short ball does it for Matheesha Pathirana and CSK! Runs in hard from over the wicket angle and bangs it short at the batter with pace. KL Rahul is rushed on the pull shot and only manages a feather off the gloves. MS Dhoni does the rest behind the stumps and KL Rahul walks back after a good innings of 77.

19.11

Full and outside off. Stubbs drags it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

19.12wd

18.46

DROPPED! Mukesh Choudhary drops a sitter off his own bowling! Slower delivery just outside off on a good length. KL Rahul goes for a wild slog but mistimes the ball high up in the air. Mukesh Choudhary settles under the ball but does not hold onto it. The batters run a single.

STRATEGIC BREAK! CSK are struggling at 112/5 at the end of 16 overs and need another 72 off the last four overs. Both the batters are well set now and will need to up the ante to get close to the target. The required rate has touched 18 runs to the over and the home side will want to avoid a hat-trick of losses. The Capitals, meanwhile, have done most things right and are on top of their game. They will look to pick a couple more wickets and squeeze the game in their favor. Axar Patel finally brings himself into the attack.

Right then! The umpires and the players make their way out to the middle to start the first inning. It's the pair of KL Rahul and Jake Fraser-McGurk that walks out to bat for the Delhi Capitals. Khaleel Ahmed has the new ball in hand and is ready to start the attack for the Chennai Super Kings at home. Let's Play!

Jake Fraser-McGurk is down for a quick chat. He says that the biggest takeaway from last season was finding ways to score boundaries against different oppositions and in different conditions. Reckons that they are very blessed to have Kevin Pietersen as a part of the group, and he is very great with the players. Mentions that David Warner and Ricky Ponting have had massive influences on his career, along with his coach back home.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad says they were looking to bat first but don’t mind bowling as the wicket is dry and the conditions aren't too sunny. He highlights improved batting and bowling in the last game, though fielding needs work. He believes fielding can improve with effort and wants the team to stay proactive. Gaikwad confirms he's fit and eager to play, with two changes to the lineup. Devon Conway replaces Jamie Overton, and Mukesh Choudhary comes in for Rahul Tripathi.

Axar Patel, the Delhi skipper, has won the toss and opts to BAT. Says that the bowlers will get some help in the second innings, hence the decision to bat. Adds that the dressing room atmosphere is great after two wins, and their senior players have a lot of experience and are guiding youngsters well. Mentions that they believe in the process and want to balance their playing XI. Shares that they want to try to keep the XI intact to give them some confidence in the long run. Adds that they are going with three pacers and three spinners. Ends by sharing that they have one unfortunate change with Faf du Plessis missing out with a niggle and Sameer Rizvi comes in for him.

IMPACT PLAYERS FOR CHENNAI - Shivam Dube, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Jamie Overton, Shaik Rasheed, Nathan Ellis.

Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI) - Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway (In for Rahul Tripathi), Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Vijay Shankar, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Noor Ahmad, Mukesh Choudhary (In for Jamie Overton), Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana.

IMPACT PLAYERS FOR DELHI - Mukesh Kumar, Karun Nair, Darshan Nalkande, Donovan Ferreira, Tripurana Vijay.

Delhi Capitals (Playing XI) - Jake Fraser-McGurk, KL Rahul (WK), Abishek Porel, Axar Patel (C), Tristan Stubbs, Sameer Rizvi (In for Faf du Plessis), Ashutosh Sharma (In for Mukesh Kumar), Vipraj Nigam, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohit Sharma.

TOSS - Axar Patel, the skipper of Delhi Capitals, calls it right and decides to have a BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Matthew Hayden is pitchside. He starts by saying that any team that comes here has to compete with the humidity as well. It is noted that the distance is 78 meters down the ground, and the two square boundaries are 70 m and 64 m. Eoin Morgan joins him and says that, typically, you get hardly any grass at Chepauk, and it is nicely rolled in. He reckons it might be a bit two-paced, which will make it difficult for the new batters. Hayden ends by saying that the team winning the toss might look to bat first.

There's still some time left for the toss and the big question on everyone's mind is whether Ruturaj Gaikwad is fit enough to play or not? If not, then will MS Dhoni lead CSK? Another thing to keep in mind will be the Chepauk pitch. It is the first day game this season and it will be very hot out there. Will it turn more than it has so far? A lot of questions soon to be answered, so, stick around.

On the other hand, the Delhi Capitals have made an impressive start to the season, with back-to-back victories. Their bowlers, especially Mitchell Starc and Kuldeep Yadav, have been in excellent form, taking the bulk of the wickets. Faf du Plessis, Tristan Stubbs, and the young Ashutosh Sharma have been leading the charge with the bat. Under the captaincy of Axar Patel, DC has played some exceptional cricket, and they’ll be keen to make it three wins out of three today. So, will CSK bounce back and find their rhythm, or will Delhi continue their unbeaten run? Stay tuned for the toss and team news, which will come shortly.

CSK, the home side, have had a mixed start to their campaign. They came agonizingly close in their most recent encounter but fell short by just six runs against Rajasthan Royals. Bowling first, CSK kept RR to 182/9, with Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana, and Noor Ahmad picking up key wickets. However, their chase faltered despite a strong half-century from Ruturaj Gaikwad and a useful cameo from Ravindra Jadeja, who couldn’t quite finish the job. CSK will be eager to return to winning ways in front of their home crowd and avoid a third consecutive loss.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of Match 17 in IPL 2025. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are taking on Delhi Capitals (DC) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. It’s been an exciting start to the season, but both teams are coming off contrasting fortunes. DC has been off to a flying start, winning both of their opening matches, while CSK have suffered two losses in their last three outings despite a win in their opener and will be keen to turn around their fortunes.

 …MATCHDAY…

They say each and every game is important in the ever-competitive Indian Premier League, and match number 17 will be no different, as the Chennai Super Kings host the high-flying Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Capitals are one of the only two teams that have been unbeaten this season, having won two in two. If their first win against LSG was a come-from-behind one, then their second win was nothing short of stamping authority, as they dominated SRH from the get-go. If in the first game the lower order won it for them, then in the second game their top order contributed immensely. At the top of the order, the ever-young Faf du Plessis did find his touch in the last game, as he scored a fifty. The likes of Jake Fraser-McGurk, Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs also contributed with handy knocks. KL Rahul’s return is a big boost, as he too played a small little cameo. DC’s dominance in the last game was such that they didn’t require the batting services of their heroes from the first game, Ashutosh Sharma and Vipraj Nigam. In the first game we saw a miraculous effort from Ashutosh and Vipraj that saw DC winning from a position of 65/5 chasing 210. In the bowling department, Mitchell Starc has led from the front, having taken 8 wickets in 2 games, which includes a 5-fer in the last one. He has been ably supported by Kuldeep Yadav, who has gotten 5 wickets in the 2 games. So overall, it seems DC currently are ticking off a lot of boxes, as a result of which they are sitting pretty in the 2nd position on the points table. On the other hand, the Chennai Super Kings are coming into the game on the back of 2 losses, as they have found their going relatively tough till now. After a comfortable win against MI in the first game, they lost by a big margin against RCB in the second one and then lost a very close game against RR in their last fixture. For them, there have been quite a few issues. In the bowling powerplay, Khaleel Ahmed has still not found an able partner to bowl with him. Their lower middle order seems to be lacking the firepower, and for that purpose, they did bring in Jamie Overton in the last game. These are still early days, and they would want to get their act together as soon as possible. On the positive side, their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, has been in superb touch, having scored 2 fifties. Rachin Ravindra, too, has been in touch with two 40-plus scores. However, their Powerplay batting hasn’t been great, as they have struggled big time in this phase, having not scored more than 45 runs in the last two games. On the bowling front, there are some positives with Khaleel Ahmed and Noor Ahmad, who have led the pace and spin bowling departments, respectively, having picked up 6 and 9 wickets apiece. Matheesha Pathirana seems to have found his touch as well, as he looked at his menacing best in the last game, where he nailed the yorkers pretty consistently. They would badly want their spin veterans Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to get into the thick of things as soon as possible. And on the batting front, they would be hoping for their middle and lower order to take some responsibility. So, coming to this upcoming afternoon game, one could expect a typical slow Chennai wicket, which could aid spin big time. With both teams having strong spin bowling attacks, who will emerge on top? Can Axar Patel's troops spin a web in Chepauk, or will the five-time champions CSK find some winning momentum? We shall find out.
